ANNOUNCEMENT: Rocks & Railways, by Maz Maddox

QSFer Maz Maddox has a new paranormal western romance out in the Stallion Ridge series: “Rocks & Railways.”

Mack Kelly is a man of many talents: deputy, former solider, expert coffee drinker and a real suave player with the men. What he’s absolutely not is a person who should be in charge of anything.

Especially an entire town.

When Stallion Ridge is down one sheriff, the absolute last thing Mack wants is to have to fill in Centaur size horseshoes. Wearing the mantle of the man in charge, he now has to not only keep the town in order, but help facilitate the construction of the shiny new railway.

There’s just one tiny problem — there’s a damn demon sleeping inside where the railway needs to go. Not just a demon, but one made of stone who used to be a god.

With horns.

And a tail.

And a really nice ass.

Mack snagged a lantern from the wall and walked closer, noticing that Brick did not follow him. The detail in the statue was breathtaking. How on earth someone could have crafted such a thing was beyond reasoning. The stone man was powerful, with broad shoulders and matching chest, a stomach of relaxed but defined muscles and thick, gorgeous thighs which the statues hands were resting on. Laying flat on the chest was the carving of a necklace with the milky, iridescent shine of an opal at its center.

The horns seemed cracked, which looked to be the only flaw of the entire thing. They reached up from the brow, curving back over his skull in a lazy spiral that curved up again at the tips. Below the horns was a mane of straight hair that rested past his delicious shoulders almost to the middle of his chest.

Mack bent at the waist to peer up at the face angled towards the ground. Straight nose, high cheekbones, full lips. Damn, if this man was real Mack would be throwing himself at his feet. Whoever had made this thing was talented and had the best imagination.

“This is amazing. How long you think it’s been in here?”

How did it get in here?” Brick shifted on his feet some, the crunch of his boots on the dirt echoing in the cave. “There’s no way in besides how we got in.”

“Maybe there used to be a cave entrance. Landslides will block off the opening sometimes. Damn, if you aren’t beautiful.” Mack reached up and touched the smooth stone of the statues lips.

“Mack…” Brick’s tone was uneasy. “Maybe don’t touch it.”

“It’s just a statue, Brick. See?” Mack ran his hand over the horns. “Nothing to be scared of.”

There was a part of him that wondered if there was a way to get the damn thing out of the cave. Maybe he could convince them to haul this masterpiece back to his house. It would be one hell of a conversation piece. The stone in the necklace was haunting. Each time the light played against the surface of the teardrop opal, the hues of pinks, blues, purples and white swirled like smoke trapped inside.

It wasn’t until Mack reached out to touch the opal that he noticed the statues eyes were open.

Had they been open?

It was damn uncanny how stunning the stone man’s features were. Mack had been leaning in so far that he could count the feathery lashes on the stunning red eyes. Like the opal, they danced with swirling colors that seem to capture the light. Only the eyes were molten reds and golds, like he fiery inners of a volcano.

And damn if it didn’t look like the onyx pupils flexed like they were watching him back.

“You are goddamn beautiful.”Just when Mack’s day couldn’t have gotten any further away from normal, the goddamn statue blinked.
