ANNOUNCEMENT: Shadowing the Light, by Miranda Turner

Shadowing the Light

QSFer Miranda Turner has a new MM fantasy book out, The Bearer of Truth Book One: Shadowing the Light.

“Everybody has their own agenda. Everybody.”

Hunted for the unique blood that runs through his veins, half-angel, half-demon Gabriel Sinclair lives without expectations. On the run from forces on both sides of an ancient conflict, he searches for strength and peace in a world which only seeks to use him.

When Gabriel is forced to stop running, assigned a team—and a mate—he doesn’t want, and reluctantly tasked with a mission, he must overcome obstacles both real and imagined. Otherwise, the world as he knows it, and the mate he’s reluctantly come to care for, may cease to exist.

“I will do as the Creator bids me. Always.”

Evander Ryan is special, and he knows it. The final handcrafted immortal warrior for the light, he is the Creator’s greatest masterpiece. For fifty-eight years, he’s lived his life in black and white, coddled by his Maker, while leading his team to countless victories against their enemies. Those fights were easy. Working with a new, uncooperative mate who sees the world in shades of gray? Less so.

As Evander’s eyes are opened to the existence of light warriors who are not good, dark warriors who are, and the wider world of supernatural beings, he learns nothing is as he thought it was, and his mate isn’t who he thought he was either. Maybe there’s something to be said for not always following the rules. . .

Striding down the street, Gabriel tried to rid himself of the anger. “Stupid fucking Bellators. They think they’re so much better than everyone else because they’re the Creator’s chosen. What. The. Fuck. Ever,” he grumbled as he walked along.

And what was with Evander reaching out to him and practically begging for him to stay?

Shaking himself out of his thoughts, he saw he was near a fae establishment he really liked and decided he could use a drink and time around people who didn’t look at him like a second-class citizen. Taking a left down a side street, he soon reached the small, out-of-the-way bar. Pushing open the door, he walked into the sparsely lit interior. The stools were pretty empty this time of day. Thank the gods. Gabriel did not want to people right now.

Sitting down at the bar, he placed an order for a beer from a local brewery they had on tap. Taking a long drink, he tried to make himself relax. The fight still had his body on high alert; his blood was rushing through his veins. He couldn’t afford to stay like that too long because it reduced the time he was able to go between feedings. It also exhausted him. He normally slept after battles, but it could have been because he didn’t feed enough as well. Everything wouldn’t be so hard on him if he regularly ingested blood. But he couldn’t bring himself to do it. He apparently couldn’t do a lot of things.

As he sat there trying to enjoy his beer in peace, a fae about his size approached and occupied the stool right next to him. Gabriel gave him the side eye, saying, “The ten other available stools not good enough for you?”

Grinning unrepentantly, the lithe man stuck his hand out stiffly. “My name is Dubhlainn.”

Gabriel stared blankly at his hand. “My condolences.” He turned back to his beer.

The hand dropped. “I see your beauty.” Gabriel scoffed. “But…” Dubhlainn raised his voice to be heard over Gabriel’s disgusted noise. “But it is not why I am here. I just want to chat.”

Gabriel’s eyebrows drew together then one rose doubtfully. “Seriously?”

“Yes, I am not from around here. I want someone to talk to, nothing else. I will even buy you a beer.”

Gabriel had noticed a slight lilting accent when the pretty fae spoke. “All right. I’ll buy my own beer though.”

“Marvelous,” Dubhlainn exclaimed, tossing his long blond hair back over his shoulder. He extended his hand again, and that time, Gabriel shook it.

They sat and companionably enjoyed a few beers while they chatted about nothing of importance. Inconsequential banter which helped to relax Gabriel the last little bit. Gabriel was enjoying Dubhlainn’s overly formal speech and stiff manner. He wasn’t unfriendly, more unsocialized. They were having a good time learning about each other until the door opened and Dubhlainn tensed.

“Are you okay?” Gabriel inquired.

“Yes, I just…shit.” The fear in his hazel eyes pulled at Gabriel’s heartstrings.

Gabriel sighed. Every fucking time he tried to relax something went wrong. Why did the drama always find him? “Do you need help?”

“If you would be so kind as to get me out of here without them seeing me, I would be very grateful.”

“Sure, man. I’ll make sure they don’t notice you. See the doorway right there?” Dubhlainn nodded. “That’s the back exit. I’ll provide a distraction, you get out there. I’ll meet you four alleyways to the left in fifteen minutes.” Gabriel looked over his shoulder at the two gigantic fae warriors Dubhlainn was running from. “Uh, maybe twenty.

“Go…now. Keep your head down,” Gabriel commanded him. Then he swung around off his stool and affected a drunken stumble, pulling a dollar out of his pocket. Walking across the room, he acted like he was heading for the jukebox on the other side of the bar. As he drew even with the two fae, he stuck the dollar in their face, asking them if they had change. As he asked, he swayed too far forward, losing his balance and taking the two large men down.

“Oh…I’m…I’m shhhh…shhorry. My bad.” Gabriel hiccupped. “I didn’t…shee you there.”

“Get. Off.” The warriors began trying to push Gabriel off them, but he kept stumbling and falling back onto them, clinging like a barnacle to their bodies to keep them from getting up. After a few minutes of struggling, they managed to extricate themselves from Gabriel and made a mad dash for the back door.

Smiling to himself, Gabriel stood up. Steady on his feet, he slinked out after them, intending to make sure his new friend got away safely.

Staying far enough behind them that they wouldn’t notice him, Gabriel followed the warriors through the alleyways. They kept trying to scent the air, but with all the scents in city alleys, it was almost impossible to single out any one being unless you were a were of some sort. Eventually, they turned the wrong way to continue their search, and Gabriel made his way to the meeting spot.

When he arrived, Dubhlainn wasn’t alone. “Fuck.” Why the hell was Michael there? “Was this one of your stupid fucking tests?” Gabriel asked.

“No, Gabriel. I was here to find you and saw you providing a distraction for the fae. I followed him when he left. I assure you, I’ve never met him before in my life.”

Gabriel rolled his eyes. “Way to be creepy, Michael. Dubhlainn, are you okay?”

“I am well, Gabriel. I will take my leave of you now. I would like to offer a token of my appreciation.” Bowing at the waist, Dubhlainn handed Gabriel a gold coin the likes of which he’d never seen. “Do not lose it. Its worth is beyond anything money can buy.”

Gabriel and Michael stared down at the coin. “What’s it fo…” Gabriel looked up only to realize Dubhlainn had disappeared.

“What the fuck?” Gabriel spun around, searching for any sign Dubhlainn hadn’t been a figment of his imagination. Well, the coin he now slipped into his pocket was real enough.

“I must say, I do meet the most interesting people when I’m with you.” Michael chuckled.

Gabriel laughed with him. “Yeah, I seem to be catnip for the strange. Why are you here, Michael? Did Evander call you and tell on me?”

“Not exactly. Luc’s been sentenced to twenty lashes.” Gabriel winced. He didn’t care who you were, twenty lashes fucking sucked.

“Ouch.”

“Yes, well, hopefully he’ll remember those the next time he wants to act like an idiot. Gabriel…”

“No, Michael. Just no. Why are you pushing so hard for me to team up with those guys? Give me one good reason that doesn’t include the Creator says so. One.”

Michael stared at him silently for several seconds before he said, “Your and every other supernatural being’s existence may depend on it.”

Fuck. “Does everything always have to be life or death with you?”

  1. What an extraordinary, wonderful, brilliant piece of writing. You should all do as I did, which is to rush to the ebook retailer of your choice, plunk your ebook bucks (yen, pounds, euros, whatevers) on the counter, grab the book and go find somewhere so you can read it through without interruptions. (Real life can wait!) You may, if you wish, enjoy wine and dark chocolate while reading (or the special treat of your choice).
