Excerpt

On reaching their floor, the elevator operator opened the doors and bowed at Vyvian and Bram. The bellboy scurried ahead to open the door to the suite and dashed away when Vyvian tossed a coin at him. Picking up the valise, Vyvian entered the room and Bram followed.

“Well, I think I’ll be more than comfortable.” Bram whistled as he took in the magnificence of the suite.

“Wonderful.” Vyvian smiled and his face was instantly transformed.

Bram had thought the chauffeur attractive before, the smile made him breathtaking. Deciding against approaching him again, Bram moved farther into the room and took a few moments to appreciate the furnishings. Deeply upholstered red leather chairs and a sofa were situated around a large fireplace with a marble mantle.

Crossing the room and along a hallway, Bram peeked into the bathroom and then the master bedroom. This too had a large marble-mantled fireplace, but it was the oversized bed that caught his eye. The pillowcases were a deep chocolate brown and they lay on top of a red velvet comforter.

A large clock hung over the mantle, its gears ticking away the seconds. An armoire stood beside the window, a writing desk was against the far wall, and there were a couple of large paintings of steamships to decorate the cream walls. Bram nodded. A bedroom he could be more than comfortable in.

His thoughts turned to Vyvian who’d remained in the living room. Smiling to himself, Bram tossed his hat onto the writing desk and discarded his jacket, hanging it on the back of the chair set at the writing desk. He also removed his tie, and unfastened his shirt down to his leather waistcoat, to display the dark hair across his chest. He sauntered back and leaned on the doorframe just as Vyvian turned around to speak to him.

Whatever the chauffeur had intended to say instantly died on his lips. His gaze seemed riveted on Bram.

Perfect. Now let’s get this show on the road. Bram moved predatorily forward, a wolfish grin curving his lips. The young man looked delectable and Bram was certain from his reactions, would be every bit as interested in a tussle between the sheets as he was.

“I hope you don’t have to run off, Vyvian. I rather hoped we could get to know each other a little more—intimately.” Bram reached Vyvian and leaned in close.

There was no mistaking the look in Vyvian’s dark chocolate eyes, or how his lips opened in a silent ‘o’ of surprise. Bram was almost close enough to taste them when his feet were swept out from beneath him, and Vyvian moved swiftly back. Too surprised to act, Bram stared up at the chauffeur from where he sat on his ass.

Vyvian’s face had darkened into a scowl and the dragon on his lapel moved. Its head swiveled to regard him, and its mouth opened, sending a plume of smoke into the air.

By all that’s holy, the thing’s some kind of automaton like that humming bird.

“I don’t know what kind of man you take me for, Bram, but I have no interest in being some kind of doxy for you. If you need such services, then I suggest a discreet discussion with the desk clerk. The hotel is unlikely to endorse such liaisons in house, but he will know where you can— relieve your tensions. I shall be downstairs. If you’re too tired to have the arranged meeting I can request it’s rescheduled.”

Despite the quietness of Vyvian’s voice, his tone was icy, and each syllable seemed to slice through Bram as if they were shards of glass. He rose slowly to his feet.

“Please accept my apologies.” He kept his voice curt, irrationally annoyed at the turn of events. “I clearly misunderstood. I thought we were—alike. If you will give me a moment, I’d rather get the meeting over with and rest later.”
