Announcement/Interview: Regeneration, by Louise Lyons

RegenerationQSFer Louise Lyons has a new MM sci fi book out, and she’s stopping by for an interview:

In the 23rd Century in the galaxy of Sigma Kappa, Kim Fortune was the first surviving experimental enhanced human—a regenerate. Aged 15, he escaped the lab and years later, his failings as a regenerate and the suspicion of regular humans, leave him lonely and lacking in self-worth. Stranded on an abandoned planet, the arrival of a stricken ship and its crew give him hope that he may finally find what he always longed for—love.

Christian Novak is a successful regenerate with all the intended attributes—including lack of human emotion. Despite their immediate attraction to each other, Kim’s failing confidence, and Christian’s inability to empathize are a recipe for disaster. But war, imprisonment, and danger throw them together, and after each saves the other’s life, their feelings begin to change.

Can a seemingly unsuitable pair ever find love, or is a future together destined to fail?

Interview

Hi and thanks for having me today at Queer Sci Fi :)

QSF: How did you deal with rejection letters?

LL: I shrug and move on. The very first submission I ever made in early 2014 was rejected, but the publisher gave me hope, by saying, “We like your writing style, but the theme of this story isn’t for us, can you send us something else?” I was delighted. I’ve been lucky in only having a small number of rejections since then, but I literally, shrug and either submit elsewhere, or self-pub.

QSF:If I were a Hollywood producer about to put your book on the big screen, who would you want me to cast as the leads? Why? And can we have pictures to drool over?

LL: MC Kim Fortune is difficult to find, because he has a unique specific look. Someone like Nicholas Hoult would fit, maybe with turquoise contact lenses and long hair extensions dyed blue-black, lol. Second MC, Christian Novak, is easy – Dwayne Johnson is perfect for him. Maybe a little old, but his look and build is right for the role.

QSF: Of your writing, who is your favorite character/favorite book?

LL: I love Casper Mancuso in Favorite Toy. It’s a novella from early 2016. Casper is adorable, sweet, sexy, loud and talkative. I loved him so much I named my puppy after him.

QSF: Tell me one thing hardly anyone knows about you.

LL: When I was in my teens I always fancied myself riding a huge powerful motorcycle. When I was 34 I met a new man who had previously owned motorcycles. He showed me photos of some and I bought exactly what I’d dreamed about in my teens – a 750cc supersport motorcycle without even knowing I could ride one. I did an intensive riding course over 4 days, passed my test first time, and rode that motorcycle for 8 years without a single mishap. I still ride, but I have a smaller bike suitable for commuting.

QSF: Were you a voracious reader as a child?

LL: I couldn’t get enough of reading. My friends would call at my house to see if I wanted to go out and play and I’d tell them I was too busy reading and to go away. Unsurprisingly I’ve always been a bit of a loner.

QSF: What are you reading?

LL: I’ve been on a bit of a Renae Kaye bender lately, and have read 5 or 6 or her books one after another. She’s one of my favorite authors. I have a couple of Jay Northcotes on my Kindle that I’ll be reading next.

QSF: What are you working on now, and when can we expect it?

LL: I’ve almost finished writing a taboo novella called Separation. It’s a twins separated at birth story, who then meet aged 21. I’ll be self-publishing it probably late spring. I have a novel-length paranormal romance on the go as well. It’s a tough one to write and I only have 4 chapters written, but I hope to finish it this year. I have a lot of the story mapped out, but I think that’s why I’m finding it hard work. Usually I’m a pantser and the characters tell me where they want to go, but this is different. It has a storyline I have to stick to in order to achieve the end result I want, and I don’t think my boys, Tyler and Will, like that very much! It’s called The Power of Will. It probably won’t be published until 2018.

QSF: What pets are currently on your keyboard, and what are their names? Pictures?

LL: He’s not on my keyboard, but sleeping on my feet. Casper, my Dobermann puppy, named after my much-loved character in Favorite Toy (see earlier question).

Casper

QSF: What was your first published work? Tell me a little about it.

LL: Conflicted with Dreamspinner Press. It’s a story about two men who, along with their friends, spend time in the world of drag-racing (something I love to do myself). It’s an enemies to lovers story, and one that I would rewrite if I could. I wrote it in the third person, thinking this would be more popular, but my writing flows much better in first person. I’d switch it, and probably have less sex in it! There is A LOT. So if you like a lot of sauce, grab a copy of Conflicted, hahaha.

QSF: Where do you as an author draw the line on gory descriptions and/or erotic content?

LL: I have no filter! I can’t say I’ve written anything gory, at least not in my usual genre of romance. But I do write very detailed “love” scenes.

Author Bio

Louise Lyons comes from a family of writers. Her mother has a number of poems published in poetry anthologies, her aunt wrote poems for the church, and her grandmother sparked her inspiration with tales of fantasy.

Louise first ventured into writing short stories at the grand old age of eight, mostly about little girls and ponies. She branched into romance in her teens, and MM romance a few years later, but none of her work saw the light of day until she discovered FanFiction in her late twenties. Posting stories based on some of her favourite movies, provoked a surprisingly positive response from readers. This gave Louise the confidence to submit some of her work to publishers, and made her take her writing "hobby" more seriously.

Louise lives in the UK, about an hour north of London, with a mad dog called Casper, and a collection of tropical fish and tarantulas. She works in the insurance industry by day, and spends every spare minute writing. She is a keen horse-rider, and loves to run long-distance. Some of her best writing inspiration comes to her, when her feet are pounding the open road. She often races home afterward, and grabs pen and paper to make notes.

Louise has always been a bit of a tomboy, and one of her other great loves is cars and motorcycles. Her car and bike are her pride and job, and she loves to exhibit the car at shows, and take off for long days out on the bike, with no one for company but herself.
