Asexuality in Speculative Fiction

Asexuality

Today’s topic comes from QSFer Elizabeth Barrette:

Asexuality in spec-fic.

Asexuality doesn’t get talked about much – many folks have dismissed it, in fact, as it doesn’t seem to make sense to them. After all, the thinking goes, who wouldn’t want to have sex?

On the other hand, the idea of homosexuality has long been discounted because straight people couldn’t envision it for themselves.

So my questions today – how would you define asexuality? As a writer, have you included any asexual characters? As a reader, have any of the books you read included them?

  1. I cannot think of any books with characters who are clearly defined as asexual but for an awful long time, through the early 1970s or so, most Science fiction was aimed at a teenager audience and ANY mention of sexual orientation or activity was verboten. Read any of the mainstream science fiction magazines of the 1930s through 1960s era and the stories all have asexual characters only.

IMO Burroughs Mars series was one of the few stories series that included a marriage and procreation with kids. Not clear to me though how an earth mammal reproduced with a Martian egg layer ;-)
