SPACE: Our First Known Interstellar Visitor Had a Violent Past

'Oumuamua

An interstellar object called ‘Oumuamua has confounded astronomers ever since it passed through our solar system in October of last year. Scientists initially thought that the object — the first-ever visitor from another solar system spotted by Earth-based telescopes — was a comet. Later, they considered it an asteroid and even later described it as a possibly comet-like icy body with a rocky crust. Now, scientists have found that in addition to its confusing appearance, ‘Oumuamua — an up to 1,300-foot-long (400 meters), cucumber-shaped object — likely has a rather dramatic history. When astronomers from Queen’s University Belfast in Northern … Read more

SCIENCE: Electronic Skin May Help Prevent Robots from Crushing Us (Unless They Really Want To)

A metallic robot hand with “Terminator”-like power sounds good for the movies. But what about a real-life future where that android is now cradling your baby or just shaking your hand? That’s when attributes like “gentle” and “sensitive” might be more warranted to avoid a human-crushing outcome. Electronic skin may be the answer, as it could give such robots (and even prosthetic limbs) the ability to sense how forceful their handshakes and cradles are when interacting with humans. A new electronic skin may also prove more robust than previous versions to prevent accidental damage. It could even heal with the … Read more

FOR WRITERS Today’s writer topic comes from QSFer J. Scott Coatsworth: Most authors I know who have been at it for any length of time have a “fixit list” – things they know they do that their editors hate, that they try to fix just before submission (or train themselves not to do in the first place. What are some of yours? Apologies to Erik for stealing his series/character title, but it seemed appropriate. :P Join the chat

ANNOUNCEMENT: Zeus, by Wendy Rathbone

Zeus

QSFer Wendy Rathbone has a new MM fantasy book out in her Fantastic Immortals series: When I throw the lightning and summon the thunder, it isn’t always out of anger, but often from a love so all-consuming it could only be the effect of Eros himself. Yes, he is beautiful. Of course he is. How could he be otherwise, with hair the color of sunlight and white-feathered wings that drape to the floor? And he is as ancient as the myth of time itself, an immortal with powers and glamour beyond my ability to imagine. He struggles to teach me … Read more
