A columnist for a US tabloid has claimed JK Rowling’s new Harry Potter spin-off is, in fact, a metaphor for LGBT rights. ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is released today (Friday, November 18) and takes fans of the magical universe across the Atlantic to explore the wizarding world of the United States. Writing for the New York Post, Kyle Smith claimed the film is a “gay liberation epic” and might be the “gayest superhero movie since X-Men: First Class”.  Comparing the wizarding world of New York City to the LGBT community, he said the film “explores a clandestine … Read more

Review: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Fantastic Beasts

Written by J.K. Rowling and directed by David Yates, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them is a spin-off of the Harry Potter phenomenon. In giving us a prequel to the Harry Potter universe, Rowling takes us on an adventure with super-geek Newt Scamander in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards. A powerful wizard is causing trouble, but other forces are also at work. This story is set seventy years before we see Harry Potter reading Scamander’s book while studying at Hogwarts. JK Rowling has hinted that the relationship between gay wizard characters Dumbledore and Grindelwald will be central to her upcoming Harry Potter spin-off films. Rowling has penned the script for upcoming film Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, starring Eddie Redmayne, which is set in the same universe as the Harry Potter films but takes place in 1920s New York. The setting of the film rules out the return of many fan favourites from the Potter franchise, who were not alive in the 1920s – but some speculated speculating that the film could feature a young version of beloved … Read more

Dispatches from Hogwarts G.S.A.: A Game of Thrones Report Card

We love HBO’s Game of Thrones. It’s some of the best storytelling on premium cable, possibly the best production quality ever for a TV series (DRAGONS!), and the directing and acting are pretty darn awesome to boot. We’re also really happy the phenomenally popular show has increased interest in high fantasy on the small screen, big screen, and in books. Another thing we love about GoT is that it has gay, lesbian and bisexual characters and decent portrayals of women. The Hogwarts G.S.A. believes gender equality and LGBTQ equality go hand-in-hand, so strong, diverse female characters are important to us … Read more

Dispatches from Hogwarts G.S.A.: Hello QSFers!

When Scott posted an open invitation to write a column for QSF, I thought: “Cool opportunity!” Then I thought, “What the hell am I going to call it?” That question followed me around for a while like a storm cloud, sending me hiding for cover, too filled with angst to even try to tackle a response. I mean, A: I’m an author, so whatever I called this column had to be clever and good. And B: QSF is a site for sci fi and fantasy fans and writers, so the expectation for cleverness is especially high. Then, C: Whatever I … Read more
