Pop-Up ‘Star Trek’ Theater

Star Trek London Tube

Space isn’t the final frontier; the London Tube is. Well, it was for a group of possibly dedicated fans who decided to boldly go where few have gone before by acting out a scene dressed in Star Trek-esque uniforms while riding the subway Wednesday. The actors got the pseudo-serious tone of the series right, but the uniforms weren’t exactly identical. Their tunics had a lightning bolt logo, not the traditional Starfleet insignia, and the patch was placed near the righthand side, not the left. What the enterprising troupe lacked in elaborate special effects, though, they made up for with sheer … Read more

NEWS: Zealandia

Zealandia

We’re taught in elementary school that there are seven continents on Earth — Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. But geography textbooks across the world might have to add one more to that list — Zealandia. Zealandia is a continent that is 94 percent submerged underwater, which is why it took so long for geologists to identify it. The 6 percent that is above water comprises what many know as New Zealand and New Caledonia, according to a study in GSA Today, the journal of the Geological Society of America. Zealandia spans almost 2 million square … Read more

U=(N/T)M*G: Machine

Elon Musk talked about something interesting recently, which is not surprising at any given time. Musk’s ideas border on hard science fiction more often than not. But in this instance, he was stating a mere fact. Eventually, humanity is going to end up more machine than man. Me personally, I think it will be pretty damned cool. Sort of like Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies books without the over-emphasized idea of beauty or terrorists that started that entire world-building scenario off. I could download a complete manuscript from my brain onto the Net without the whole hassle of publishers, editors, and artists … Read more

NEWS: Losing Your Partner to VR

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality can be pretty engrossing. Like, really engrossing. Comedian and YouTube star Natalie Tran demonstrated just how all-consuming the VR experience can be in “VR Partner Life,” a video posted on Monday. It shows her partner, Rowan, playing what appears to be some sort of driving game. Meanwhile, Tran demonstrates some expert karaoke and dance moves as she cycles through the varied emotional stages of losing your man to another woman a video game. Asta’s Annotations: The Trickster God as Queer Icon

Trickster gods occur in many cultures and often demonstrate a certain gender and/or sexual fluidity. For today’s post I will concentrate on one: Norse trickster Loki.

Loki practices forms of magic which, in Norse culture, mark him as effeminate. He’s also a gender-bending shapeshifter, as demonstrated in the following tale….

When Did You Discover Time Travel?

Time Travel - Pixabay

How old were you when you first encountered the concept of time travel? I used to believe it was when I first saw the George Pal version of The Time Machine which came out in 1960, and I didn’t see until 1962 or 1963 when I was ten or eleven. Memory is a highly unreliable resource, especially for dating. I vaguely remember that seeing the movie made me get the book from my school library the next day. What’s weird, is I don’t remember being blown away by the idea of a time machine at that time. And time travel … Read more
