COSPLAY: FF Edition

Carina and Sørine are a couple from Denmark. Last year, the two finally tied the knot – and they looked absolutely stunning on the day. They are keen manga, comic and video game fans. For the 2017 Sakura Festival in Copenhagen, they dressed in yukata – a form of light kimono – they bought on their last trip to Japan. But those are not the only gorgeous photos the couple share online. In their free time, they are also avid cosplayers who travel to conventions all over the place. They are not just going to events in in Denmark, but … Read more

Writers and Readers Help Chechnya’s Queer Community

Chechnya

When the news started coming out of Chechnya about the organized police campaign of torture, imprisonment and murder being conducted against men perceived to be gay, it hit me hard. Growing up in the Netherlands just a few decades after World War II, I learned to dread authoritarianism and genocide — authoritarianism’s frequent offspring — early on in life. On school and family outings we visited houses with secret rooms where families had provided refuge to Jews as they sought to escape Occupied Europe. Every summer, we would drive through northern Germany to see my cousins, and my mom would announce the … Read more

ONLINE: New Plugin Makes Internet Forms Gender Free

form gender

Denmark is making the internet gender-free. The organizers of Copenhagen Pride started a new initiative in response to unnecessary gender questions on online forms. Calling them not just ‘so yesterday’ but also very discriminatory, despite Denmark being very open. ‘At Copenhagen Pride we are proud to represent one of the first countries in the world to stop defining being transgender as a mental illness,’ they said. ‘But the gender struggle does not end there.’ So they set out to rid the internet of the need to tick a box confirming your gender. With Gender Free Internet we wish to give people all over the … Read more

SCIENCE: Can This Worm Eat Us Out of Our Plastic Mess?

wax worms

Each year, the world produces 300 million tons of plastic, much of which resists degradation and ends up polluting every corner of the globe. But a team of European scientists may have found a unique solution to the plastic problem. They discovered that a common insect can chew sizable holes in a plastic shopping bag within 40 minutes. “This study is another milestone discovery for the research on biodegradation of plastics,” says Wei-Min Wu, an environmental engineer at Stanford University. The discovery was led by Federica Bertocchini, a developmental biologist at the University of Cantabria in Spain. She first noticed … Read more
