Enchanted Conversations seeks Baba Yaga retellings

Illustration of Baba Yaga flying in a mortar
Illustration of Baba Yaga by Ivan Bilibin (1876–1942), first published in 1900. Work is in the public domain.

Kate Wolford of Enchanted Conversation: A Fairy Tale Magazine is compiling an anthology of stories based on Baba Yaga.

Baba Who?

Baba Yaga, a witch from Slavic folklore, lives in a house with chicken feet, flies around in a mortar while holding a pestle, and may or may not be a cannibal.

Wolford is looking for stories of 7,500 to 20,000 words and will pay $50 per story. The submission period is January 1 to March 1, which means you can start writing now, but don’t email her the story until the new year.

Find more submission details, plus lots of resources for learning more about Baba Yaga (free ebooks!) at Dale Cameron Lowry’s blog for writers:

  1. If you want to get excited about the Baba Yaga story and get inspiration for writing for this call for submission, then I suggest reading Uprooted by Naomi Novik, or listen to the audiobook. It was mesmerizing. And if it doesn’t get your creative juices flowing about Baba Yaga, nothing else will.
