Harry Potter is 20 years old, sort of. This week marks the 20th anniversary of the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone back in 1997 (renamed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the US). The book by LGBT ally JK Rowling sparked a phenomenon in publishing and the wider world of culture and entertainment.
It was followed by six sequels, a number of print and digital spinoffs, a stunning theatrical production, some theme parks and, oh, some of the most successful movies ever made.
It’s no surprise then, that everyone’s getting in on the celebration as the book turns 20 – including Facebook with its secret Potter feature.
