Rowling confirmed in 2007 that the fictional headmaster of Hogwarts is gay, and that ‘his love for Grindelwald was his “great tragedy”.

This may also be why Dumbledore doesn’t trust himself, in spite of his great power. He uses his insight to select champions, people to act in his stead. Like he appears to have selected Newt. Like he will later select Snape and Harry.
It’s interesting seeing Scamander show up…I liked the line about Newt never meeting a monster he couldn’t love. I wonder if he might not be Hagrid’s father?
The last scene with Flaumel was awesome. :)
