Technology: Dino Chickens

Dinosaur Chicken

A few years ago Bhart-Anjan Bhullar, then a Ph.D. student in Arhat Abzhanov’s lab at Harvard, did something pretty incredible: He took an embryonic chicken and inhibited a couple of genes during its development. It was a tiny adjustment that produced a pretty amazing result: “Those chickens that were altered in that way, they grew up to have a snout that looked like a dinosaur snout,” he tells Inverse. Bhullar’s research exists at the strange intersection of molecular biology and paleontology. When he’s not teaching at Yale, he’s investigating how major distinguishing features of animal groups came about — in … Read more

Review: Gravitational Attraction, by Angel Martinez

Gravitational Attraction

I just finished reading Angel Martinez’s MM sci fi book Gravitational Attraction, a title I’ve been meaning to get around to for more than two years. Anyone who knows me also knows how rare my free reading time is. So when things calmed down post-Christmas, I decided to finally jump in and read it. The story is set in Martinez’s ESTO universe. In a nutshell, Isaac is a damaged ex-starship pilot working on an independent ship. Turk is a mostly human, strapping giant mercenary who is dealing with some damage of his own. They could be the solutions to each others’ problems, … Read more

U=(N/T)M*G: MDMA

Yeah, I wrote those ridiculous letters for this post, knowing full well what they mean. And yes, I also know that knee-jerk reaction I had when I first read those letters in conjunction to anything having to do with medicine. For those that don’t know, MDMA is more commonly known as Ecstasy. I personally know of it’s short, sordid history as a party drug because my sister and a couple of my friends. I especially remember a party out in the desert of my junior year where I babysat a boy not much older than me while he was rolling. … Read more
