Review: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Fantastic Beasts

Written by J.K. Rowling and directed by David Yates, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them is a spin-off of the Harry Potter phenomenon. In giving us a prequel to the Harry Potter universe, Rowling takes us on an adventure with super-geek Newt Scamander in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards. A powerful wizard is causing trouble, but other forces are also at work. This story is set seventy years before we see Harry Potter reading Scamander’s book while studying at Hogwarts. Redmayne is such a talented actor that he makes it appear as if this part was … Read more

Asta’s Annotation: Taking it to the Bedroom

Asta's Annotations

Apologies for being a day late with my post. I thought I’d already scheduled this one ahead of time, but clearly I was thinking of last month’s post instead. Oops. Anyway, without further ado….

It’s summer here in Australia, and with the weather hotting up, it seemed a good time to talk about writing sex scenes. Plus, it conveniently ties in with one of our recent discussions. Below I’ll outline the four points to keep in mind to ensure your climax goes off with a bang.

Sources of Inspiration: Keeping the Creativity Flowing

I’ve written this way in advance, because November is going to be absolutely mad. Right now, I should be right in the middle of the madness. :) Anyone else involved in the month long writing dash known as NaNoWriMo? Beauty and the Beast trailer

The new Beauty and the Beast trailer has been released. Predictably, it’s all kinds of amazing. The movie stars Harry Potter actress Emma Watson as Belle. Meanwhile, Sir Ian McKellen is the voice of Cogsworth. The film – featuring a new-look, computer-generated beast – is due in March 2017. It’s a live-action remake of the 1991 original. (Which was the first animation to earn a Best Picture Oscar nod.) By Jamie Tabberer – Full Story at Gay Star News

Gotham star Robin Lord Taylor: Gay Penguin Complaints Homophobic

Robin Lord Taylo

Fans of “Gotham” who have a problem with a gay Penguin messing with canon are not going to get a sympathetic ear from the out actor who plays him. Robin Lord Taylor says he is pretty sure he has your number if that upsets you, but you are fine with things like Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle being childhood best friends. Taylor appeared at Rhode Island Comic Con this weekend where he called being upset over a gay Penguin “a bunch of horseshit.” If you have a problem with that and not the other examples of breaking canon in the … Read more

Queer Fantasy Roots: The Changing Role of Amazons

The image of the Amazon–whether by that name, or associated with it by tropes and functions–has served a changing variety of roles in fantastic literature over the centuries. With renewed interest in Amazonian sexuality sparked by the official admission by D.C. Comics that the all-female home island of the Amazonian heroine Wonder Woman is not entirely a fortress of heterosexuality, it’ a good opportunity to look at how Amazon sexuality has been viewed over the ages. Many historians have tried to identify the historic and cultural origins of the Amazon myth, but it’s the myth that we’re concerned with today. … Read more
