About The Book
I’ve investigated some pretty strange cases in my life, but I have to say this is a first. A corpse—a murder victim—has gone missing during the middle of an investigation, and no one has any clue where it went. Psy is called in to clear the investigative team, make sure they’re not an accomplice. It’s a four hour drive outside of Nashville, to a place famous for being haunted, so none of us are particularly eager to go.
And then we arrive on scene and I see who we’re dealing with and I want nothing more than to turn around and go right back to Nashville.
This case is complicated and strange, and absolutely nothing is as it seems at first glance. Even with my eyes, it’s going to take some digging to get to the truth.
Psychic detective Jonathan Bane and his bodyguard/lover/anchor Donovan Havili are back in a third quirky, enjoyable mystery that calls them out of Nashville to the murder site of a haunted house.
Neither Jon or Donovan or the rest of the detective team are excited about visiting the structure where repeated unexplained and downright spooky occurrences happen. But since Jon can read suspects and immediately tell if they are guilty or not, local police request his help.
Jon’s not sure he wants to go through the nearly debilitating aftereffects of a psychic reading, and he knows that the byproducts of his abilities—being able to shut down anything electronic in the area—will be a pain to deal with. All of that for the possibility of finding who murdered the new owner of the notorious house? The new owner, whose dead body vanishes within minutes of its being discovered.
In addition, there’s a really good chance that one of the team is being stalked by a former lover. Or at least, that’s what the man claims though he can’t really prove it.
So everyone’s freaked out, unhappy at being away from home, and reluctant to help the skeptical local police rank and file, who think they are interlopers blundering onto their turf while the higher ups just want Jon and team to quickly point out the killer and go home.
While the plot involves a lot of soul-searching and twists and turns, author Sherwood adds comic relief through Donovan’s completely loveable mother, who is ready to inundate everyone with home cooking at every turn. If a problem can’t be solved by Pacific Island goodies, it’s insurmountable according to mom.
This is another exceptionally fun addition to the series which will please fans. To get the most enjoyment from the Jon stories, however, I’d strongly suggest readers begin with the first book and read them in order. They’re well worth the time.
