Sources of Inspiration: Irriation

There’s a lot of things which annoy me. Sometimes far too many things.

The casual remark someone makes online. The bum sitting on my steps, blocking my way to my home, refusing to move. The decisions people in positions of power often make, decisions which will only cause more problems.

There’s always something. More often than not, it’s not worth losing my temper over.

This doesn’t mean I can’t use that irritation. Such experiences can add up to some pretty funny stories. (The incident with the bum already became one. My mom laughed her head off when I described the encounter.)

As I tell people about these annoyances, I often find myself laughing as well. I’m not the only one.

My husband had a near melt down when he, my mother-in-law, her friend, and I were held up in Heathrow, due to the prohibition against liquids. Unknown to any of us, my mother-in-law had packed her suitcase with every spare shampoo, conditioner, and bath gel we’d encountered in various hotels. She didn’t know about the prohibition. You should have seen my husband’s face when the officers at custom uncovered tiny bottle after tiny bottle buried within the confines of the suitcase.

At the time we were terrified, because we were sure we were going to miss our flight (which we did). Now everyone looks back at that memory and chortles, including my husband. Especially my husband.

Comedy is born from such situations. Throw in the supernatural, another world, another universe, and annoyance can be the key ingredient to a story many a reader will pick up.

For we all understand irritation. One of the best releases from it is to laugh at it.

How about you, dear reader? Ever turn your annoyances into story?

  1. My life is filled with annoyances but sharing them, with lots of smiles and laughter, makes me appreciate the fact that they’re only temporary. Imagining they become permanent, now those would be real stories!

  2. Very true, Jeff! Thanks, Diane…Cinnamon is the one playing ninja cat by hiding under chest while Sage is the vexed one with white paws. Usually, Sage is the one annoying Cinnamon. :)
