Warning

FOR READERS Today’s reader topic comes from QSFer Denise Dechene: This came up in a group: A lot of books have warnings or listings of possible triggers. For Readers: Are You Inspired?

Inspiring

Today’s reader topic comes from QSFer Ryane Chatman: Are you inspired by what you read? Beyond the entertainment factor. It’s a good question. I do enjoy reading most speculative books, but every now and then one comes along that moves me, that makes me think for a long time after I finish it. What are some of those books in queer spec fic for you, and why? And did any inspire you to some kind of action or change? Today’s reader topic comes from QSFer Denise Dechene: I’ve seen this lots of times. Readers upset by book prices. I know publishers set prices on their books but not sure how Indie authors do? I think some of the problem is we as readers have no idea how much it costs to produce a book for self pub. So I guess my question would be as a whole what are the costs leading up to publication? For Readers: How Many Books?

I’ve read a lot of books. Probably at least 600? Although I know some authors who read that many in a year, or close to it. *grin* And most of those have been sci fi or fantasy. But I’m still fairly low in my count of LGBTIQ books, as I discovered the MM genre (which is most of what I read in that area) only fairly recently in my life. So how about you? How many sci fi and fantasy and paranormal books do you think you’ve read, and what percentage are LGBTIQ-related? Join the chat

Discussion: Favorite Fantasy Books

Today’s topic comes from QSFer Elizabeth Barrette: What are your favorite fantasy books with queer characters and how far back do they go? I’m fondly remembering the gay unicorn that Alan Dean Foster put in one of his novels. I haven’t read a lot of fantasy with LGBTI characters myself, but I did love the characters in The Chronicles of Tornor. And you? We have a bunch of modern day fantasy works to choose from, too… Come join the chat

Opinion: What Will Happen to Our LGBT Literature?

One reason I’ve been writing all these years has to do with helping us feel good about ourselves. I’d like to think the cultural work that’s proliferated from the latter half of the twentieth century through today has contributed to building our strength so we could accomplish all we have. If the pendulum of history swings against us like a wrecking ball from the future, we’ll need the writing, the photographs, the women’s music–to stay strong, to be queer strong, just as we need it now. But will our stories be available twenty, fifty, a hundred years from now? I … Read more
