MOVIES: New Version of Horror Film Candyman Gets Praise for Gay Characters

Candyman

The 2021 reboot of Candyman is already winning praise from LGBT+ horror fans for its surprisingly progressive treatment of a gay couple. The film – dubbed a sequel to the 1992 film of the same name – hit cinemas on Friday (27 August) and immediately won critical acclaim for its deft handling of systemic racism in America. But one of the less remarked upon aspects of the film is that it features a prominent gay couple. Misfits star Nathan Stewart-Jarrett stars as Troy Cartwright, the gay brother of Brianna (Teyonah Parris). Kyle Kaminsky appears as Troy’s boyfriend, Grady. Candyman doesn’t … Read more

Entertainment: Why Blockbusters Lack Queer Characters

Deadpool

Ryan Reynolds has hinted that major US film studios avoid putting gay characters in blockbusters due to fears of alienating overseas audiences. The actor last year made his debut as pansexual superhero Deadpool, smashing box office records for an adult-rated film with the comedic take on superhero movies. Deadpool was the first non-heterosexual superhero to get his own standalone film, and was shown flirting indistinctly with both men and women. The comic book character is said to “do anything with a pulse”, while Tim Miller and Reynolds have described their version of the character as “pansexual”. By Nick Duffy – … Read more

Does Game of Thrones Have a Gay Problem?

After the heartbreaking events of recent weeks, there was little that could draw crowds away from the Gay Pride festivities in New York on Sunday afternoon. But there was something even more powerful than rainbow flags and Jell-O shots: Game of Thrones. Plenty of people, myself included, rushed home from the sea of men in chaps to watch Cersei Lannister put on a S&M outfit of her own to seize the crown. You better work, queen! And so, when Loras Tyrell died within the first 15 minutes of the show, it was a huge disappointment for gay fans. Not only … Read more

Star Wars to Get LGBTIQ Characters

JJ Abrahms

The director behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens has told The Daily Beast that there will indeed be openly gay characters zapping through the galaxy far, far away — in relatively near franchise installments. Making the rounds at a pre-Oscars event at his Bad Robot HB in LA, J.J. Abrams said it’s time that the Star Wars universe becomes more inclusive, referencing the LGBTQ community, and thankfully making no mention of Jar-Jar Binks: “To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility,” he said. “So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say there wouldn’t be a … Read more

Why Does it Matter if a Character is Gay?

Jonah Bergan bw

It’s a fair question, I suppose. It’s a fair question for those who feel that their own sexuality is somehow unimportant or is some manner disconnected from their identity. It’s a fair question for those who feel that anyone’s sexuality is an aberration or distraction from their true being. I for one don’t feel that is the case, but in this age where the mere mention of a difference between us is held up as an example of someone’s political agenda, I understand how it could seem to be a part of that and how, in order to protest the … Read more

Turning Your Characters Gay

Have you ever had a story that you wrote, oh, I dunno, ages ago, with a straight protagonist, that you’ve decided to turn gay? You know, one of those in the back of your filing cabinet that you dusted off and decided to give a fresh new take? I’ve got a novel I wrote 15 years ago – that I’m considering overhauling – including making the primary relationship a gay romance instead of a man and a woman. I’m a bit conflicted about it for two reasons: 1) I like my characters. I tend to kinda fall in love with … Read more
