Queer musician, model and actor Paris Jackson has declared that she “wants to be a Marvel hero – or a supervillain”. Speaking to Variety Jackson, who stars in the new Hulu coming-of-age movie Sex Appeal, revealed that she’s a lifelong Marvel fan, and would love to join the MCU some day. “I want to be a superhero or a supervillain,” she said. “I grew up reading the comics with my brothers. Marvel fans are getting very excited about the possibility of queer superhero Valkyrie making an appearance in the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel. Marvel fans have been openly shipping Captain Marvel and Valkyrie as a future couple within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), so it’s no surprise that the idea of the two sharing a screen in The Marvels has left fans in a frenzy. Kit Harington has called for more LGBT+ representation in superhero movies. Harington recently starred in Marvel’s Eternals alongside Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos – the first openly queer superhero in an MCU film. Phastos’ addition the franchise was eagerly welcomed by LGBT+ fans, and it seems that Marvel is keen to correct its dearth of queer representation, with the recent Loki TV series confirming its titular anti-hero as bisexual and gender-fluid. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has welcomed a new queer character in the most low-key way on the new Disney Plus series Hawkeye. In episode four, Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) – aka Hawkeye – tasked his young protégé, Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), with tracking down the trick arrows that he used to fight live-action role-playing (LARP) enthusiasts earlier in the season. Marvel’s newest entry into the cinematic universe, Eternals, comes out later this week, but “review-bombers” are already at work trying to tank the film’s reputation. They haven’t actually seen the flick, which comes out on November 5. Instead, they’re upset that it includes the first out gay couple – the superhero Phastos and his husband Ben. Describing the movie as “woke and mediocre” or worse, the fake reviewers trashed the film on IMBD, spurring the site to remove all the negative reviews flooding the page. Eternals’ director Chloé Zhao has confirmed she has talked to Marvel about not censoring LGBTQ+ content in the upcoming film for international audiences. Zhao told IndieWire that introducing Phastos, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) first openly gay superhero, was “written into the story” long before she joined as director. Phastos appears in the film with his husband and their son, and Zhao said it was important that their family and their story felt “authentic and real” because the “audience has to feel that to care”. The new Venom film will centre around a “love affair” between Eddie Brock and the symbiote, even featuring a “coming out party” for Venom. Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis told Uproxx about an interesting scene where the alien, Venom, attends a rave without his human host Eddie Brock (both played by Tom Hardy).
