DO IT YOURSELF WEEK: Day One – Starting Your Own Press/Crowdfunding

diy-1

Welcome to the first annual DIY week at QSF. We’ve got a great line-up of topics for the week, some of which are moderated – but in general, we’ll just share information about how to start and manage a small press:

Tuesday: Starting Your Own Press/Crowdfunding
Wednesday: Editing and Production; ISBNs; eBooks or Paper?
Thursday: Getting Your Books Out There; Amazon; Other Venues
Friday: Promoting Your Work
Saturday: Mistakes to Avoid, Mistakes to Make, Keeping Up Your Morale;
Sunday: Taxes and Royalties

Also, we have a special event – an interview with Matt Buscemi, owner of Fuzzy Hedgehog Press, at 1 PM Pacific. Matt will talk about the trials, tribulations and rewards of running your own press.

Today we’re talking about getting a press off the ground. The ins and outs and funding aspects especially.

So if you publish your own books, please jump in and share your experiences – how you got started and how you financed it. I’m especially interested in hearing about crowdfunding, but would love to hear from everyone.

If you are considering going out on your own, bring us your questions!

These weeks work because of participation, so please jump in!

  1. Kicking off with some questions. So I’ve got some reverted shorts that I’d like to expand and release. Where would I even start if I wanted to do my own little mini-press for my stuff and maybe some friends’ stories? What’s the costs involved? I’m familiar with setting up an LLC but what other legal/financial things are a consideration?
