Mentally ill MCs are next to impossible to come by. Especially ones that are heroes and their mental illness is not the only thing that defines them. Showtime’s Homeland gave us Claire Danes’s character who is defined as “bipolar and struggles with her demons.” This is not helpful. The military action film Mile 22 gave us Mark Wahlberg’s character who has ADHD and a few other issues and yet he is still a capable hero. We want diversity and see ourselves in stories and media. So why don’t we see more of them in queer speculative fiction? Readers, share your favorites. Writers, share your books with characters dealing with mental illness.
