A Wolf-Changing Incident - Karenna Colcroft

QSFer Karenna Colcroft has a new MM paranormal book out: A Wolf-Changing Incident.

When werewolf Yves Diamond happens on a multi-vehicle crash on a Manitoba highway, he ignores the danger and rescues Will Mandel from a burning car. The moment he sets eyes and hands on Will, Yves knows the man belongs in his life. If Will survives his injuries.

Waking days later in a hospital, Will is confused by the presence of a man the nurses believe is his relative. But something in him recognizes that Yves is meant to be in his life. As Will’s recovery continues and Yves visits him frequently, the connection between the two grows into something neither can ignore–and neither dares to admit.

Werewolf law prohibits telling humans that werewolves exist–and once Yves’s Alpha learns about the visits with Will, he forbids Yves any further contact with the human. Having Will has changed Yves’s life for the better, but their bond might be severed before it can fully form.

The pain. Oh, my fucking lord, the pain!

I tried to scream, but my throat was too raw. All that came out was a faint croak. I tried to open my eyes, but the light was way too bright, sending shards of agony through my head.

“It’s all right. You’re in the hospital.”

The male voice was familiar, but I couldn’t place it. Not with someone hammering steel spikes into my head and chest. The only thing I managed to notice was the slight Quebecois accent that turned “hospital” into “’opital.”

“I’ll call the nurse,” the voice said.

I felt a body leaning over me but didn’t try to open my eyes again to see him. After a moment, a woman said, “What do you need?”

“He woke up,” the man said. “I think he’s hurting.”

“You’ll have to wait outside.” The woman’s tone was brusque. “You were told to leave earlier, weren’t you?”

“Good thing I didn’t, or you wouldn’t have paid attention to him needing you.” Footsteps clomped, growing fainter as presumably the man left the room.

“Mr. Mandel?” The woman’s voice was closer. “Can you open your eyes for me?”

I did, squinting against the light and pain. I whimpered, and she fiddled with the IV I hadn’t realized was in my arm until she touched it. “I’m Etienne, your nurse,” she said as she pressed buttons. “I’m giving you a dose of pain medication. You should feel better in a few minutes. We’ll get the doctor in to look at you shortly.”

“Where…?” Speaking hurt my throat even more, but I didn’t understand what was happening. How I’d gotten to the hospital. The last thing I remembered…

Images flashed into my mind, and I whimpered as the memories started to return. The accident. The tractor-trailer ahead of me, slamming on its brakes, skidding toward my car. I’d tried to avoid it, but I had nowhere to go. I must have hit it, but I couldn’t recall for sure. All I remembered from that point was not being able to breathe.

And someone saying “I’ve got you” as I was pulled out of my car. Saying it in a voice I remembered. A voice I had heard only a minute or so earlier.

The man who had saved me was the one who had just been here.

“Where…” I didn’t have much more luck speaking this time.

“You’re at Selkirk Regional Health Centre.” She turned toward me. Her mouth was hidden by a mask, but her eyes crinkled as if she was smiling. “I’m going to get the doctor now. He’ll explain what’s happening.”

“I…” But before I could form any words, she was gone.

Almost immediately, a man entered the room. About my height, athletic build, with short brown hair. He came over to the bed and looked down at me with light brown eyes that were filled with concern. “I’ll talk quick, before she comes back. My name’s Yves Diamond. I’m glad to see you waking up. I was afraid you wouldn’t.”

“You…Helped.” I coughed. It felt like shards of glass puncturing my trachea. “Fuck!”

“I got you out of the car, yes.” He lowered his voice. “Don’t speak if it hurts you. You remember?”

I started to speak and decided against it. Instead, I raised my hand, palm down, and tilted it side to side.

“You remember I got you out.” He pressed his lips together. “I need to go or the nurse will have my hide. I’ll come back, though. Tomorrow, most likely. If that’s all right.”

I didn’t have the slightest clue who this guy was. Or how he’d gotten in to see me at all. The hospital shouldn’t have allowed anyone in except immediate family. But here he was, and I didn’t want him to leave. I definitely wanted him to come back.
