“Sveldt, Sveldt, Sveldt,” Monarch clucked, matron to the avuncular response poised on Balthamos’ tongue. “I’m not like other vampires.”
Balthamos, proud of his restraint which had decided to take up residence, took another sip of coffee as his lover ran his long fingers through Sveldt’s tousled nest of hair. When Monarch didn’t continue, Balthamos raised an eyebrow and caught his glance.
“Yes, you explain to him, moy lyubov,” Monarch said, his voice a plush velvet. “Lunid to lunid.”
“I’m almost of age,” Sveldt said, “and I know other vampires. Well, a couple. Not many,” he finally admitted. “You two obviously are a match made in paradise, so what’s your secret?”
Balthamos took another bite of his breakfast, chewed and swallowed, and sat back in his chair.
“I don’t know what’s getting taught in schools anymore,” he said, taking a sip of coffee, “but—”
“Oh get to the good stuff!” Monarch interrupted. “Vampires are related to lunids, but that mutation is now handed over very specifically on a case by case basis.”
“Sure, you tell him,” Balthamos said, having a year ago stopped taking it personally when his partner jumped mid-stream into conversations. “I’ll eat this delicious breakfast.”
“I’m sorry,” Monarch apologized, then took two deep swallows of his morning cocktail. “But I was like this even before. Thank you for putting up with me.”
He gave Balthamos a tender look, then focused his attentions back over to Sveldt.
“It took several generations for vampires to develop nuance in Making, and during that time, well, there were a lot of unfortunate repercussions.”
“A lot of unplanned, grotesque deaths is what he’s glossing over,” Balthamos said, feeling a need for balance in the conversation.
