About The Book
As werewolf Alpha Tobias Rogan prepares for a gathering of the region’s alphas, he’s haunted by memories of tragedy at the previous regional gathering. Tragedy that nearly took his life. And to his dismay, his mate, vegan werewolf Kyle Slidell, the man fate brought him and his heart claimed, refuses to remain in safety in Boston. With their relationship fraying under the stress, the two travel to Pennsylvania for the gathering.
At the home of the regional ruler, the Arkhon Zane Wolfskin, a larger scheme begins to unfold, orchestrated by a werewolf more powerful than any other. A visiting stranger challenges Zane for leadership of the region–and wins. But the challenger wasn’t acting of his own free will, and under his rule, the Northeast Region will fall.
To protect his region, Tobias must act quickly, despite the cost to his relationship with Kyle. But if the wolf behind the plan learns Tobias’s intentions, the cost will be Tobias’s life.
The Review
Wow, this series is going from strength to strength! In ‘Try the Tofu’ Tobias tells the story, and it was great to “hear” from him for a change and read about his relationship with Kyle from the other end. Not just their relationship, actually, but the whole mess that follows when a stranger challenges Arkhon Zane for leadership of the Northeast region. There is definitely something strange going on and the whole situation had me glued to the pages! Please read the books in this series in order. Each book builds on what happened previously; also, be warned that this review contains spoilers for the first three books.
Tobias is not after power and rules his North Boston pack as much as a democracy as is possible. But, as this story shows, there are limits to his patience. When the strange werewolf defeats Arkhon Zane Tobias refuses to stand by and do nothing. As much as he knows the consequences of his actions – he is going to have to rule the entire Northeast if he wins – he cannot let this wrongness stand. Tobias has to overcome his own fear, even the way he sees himself as Alpha, and his character develops by leaps and bounds. This quote made me smile: “Dominance didn’t mean never being afraid. It just meant never letting anyone else know when you were.” I guess it’s the werewolf version on “fake it till you make it” and Tobias turns out to be very good at that!
Kyle, as usual, has a feeling that something awful is going to happen before they even leave for the “alpha con” in Pennsylvania. It is why he refuses to stay behind in Boston. Honestly, I don’t even see why Tobias tries to make him stay at their home. He should know better by now! Kyle understands that they are stronger together – wherever this knowledge comes from – and I’d expect as much because mated pairs are aways better off together. That is just the way werewolf worlds work, in my experience.
With an unspecified threat from the beginning, the suspense in this book is on the rise throughout. Something very strange is going on in the werewolf world – it almost seems like some of the magic has gone astray. And the more I found out, the more interesting this series became. With wolves trying to compel others all over the place, not much good can follow unless someone stops what is happening. This volume still ends without a solution to the underlying problem, so I am looking forward to reading the next book, hoping the problems will all be solved.
Power struggles and werewolf pack politics as we watch Tobias try to grow into something more despite his reticence to rule others. Bring on the next book!
