Writer’s block has been both vehemently denied and felt all too keenly.
I found myself thinking; what does writer’s block mean to me? What can it be? A barrier, a sinus headache, exhaustion. Writer’s block may manifest as a box in which my ideas are stored, which solidified into an actual block I cannot access. Writer’s block are stories floating away in sludge, a sludge I cannot enter or retrieve them from. Writer’s block is reality distracting me, a curse brought on by jealousy or angry gods. Writer’s block is the muse dumping me for someone far more interesting.
Huh, I think I just came up with a few metaphors I hadn’t used before. I took a bunch of them, shaping them into a poem about the various things writer’s block could be. I only scratched the surface.
How funny that examining this phenomena which stops me from writing gave me an opportunity to steal back some of the creative energy writer’s block had been sucking from me…ah ha, and there’s another metaphor, a vampire!
I never thought of writer’s block as a source of inspiration. The very notion strikes me upside the head…and there’s writer’s block as a stone thrown, striking a struggling creative down.
Writer’s block has been a stumbling block I trip over, again and again, trying to get words onto a page or in a document…and there’s another metaphor, if not a literal description.
Thinking about writer’s block, studying it, trying to analyze it, to come up with words to describe it; it’s astonishing what comes pouring out in response.
It’s almost as if the words got caught up in my mind, like gunk clogging up the sink, leaving me unable to write.
And there’s another metaphor or simile; words which pop up, trying to capture the essence of writer’s block.
It’s a paradox I’ve just got to marvel at…and possibly a way around the block. I’ve just got to think creatively, of how to apply this to works in progress I’m stuck in.
This is no easy task, but I’m a bit more hopeful than I was, seeing at what I’ve come up with, thus far.
