FOR READERS Today’s writer topic comes from QSFer Hank T. Cannon: How important is the name of the character to your initial reaction to a character? How much of your ability to move through the story is modified by a character who’s name made you initially cringe? Or maybe for a character whose named so symbolically that you expect that symbolism and it never shows? My name is Kinsey. I write paranormal romance—specifically, werewolves. Paranormal romance (PR) is a subgenre of romance encompassing any stories with fantasy or science fiction elements. The two arguably oldest sub-sub-genres of PR are also the two non-romance readers are most familiar with, thanks to “Twilight”: Vampires and werewolves. When I tell women that I write romance, they ask “What kind?” and I answer, “Werewolves,” they’ll respond with A) a quizzical look; B) a tight, embarrassed-for-me kind of smile followed quickly by a change of subject; or C) an enthusiastic declaration for Team Edward or Team Jacob. FOR READERS Today’s writer topic comes from QSFer Robin Harper: It’s finally arrived… the First Time between two characters! That magical dance of arrrrouuusal coming to fruition! What do you look for in that first time? Do you want a fantasy, or a realistic retelling of anyone’s first time with a new partner? It’s a delicate balance I have found, to write something that is bliss filled without defying too many laws of reality. Should anyone allow themselves to be bound by those laws when writing a work of fiction? OR Is it more fun when you take those ‘laws’ … Read more

FOR READERS Today’s reader topic comes from QSFer ‘Nathan Smith: How (if at all) does the output of an author play into your readership? Like, an author who releases a book every couple of years or so vs authors who release something every other month – does that factor at all into your reading habits, or your expectations?
