Excerpt
Waking up to another perfectly sunny day, Mal did his morning routine, enjoying the sameness of it. Vinx tried to coax him to the beach, but the man resisted, wanting to write, so the FelCan huffed and went out alone.
The call from Daniel came in the early afternoon. Mal fished out his comm from under a pile of homemade paper and answered.
“Hi Dan. Are you on your way over? Do you know why they’ve come here of all places?”
“Good afternoon to you, too. No, and sort of yes. The Isuzsona are loading the transport now, so we’ll be leaving soon. As for the other? They left their planet, Isuz, due to government persecution. Their Speaker, Asarra-I told you that before, right? Anyway, speaker is their title for a leader– shared that the twenty of them are essentially a family. Isuz’s governing body wanted to break up their unit, with no thought to the pair bonds made between them, citing the ‘good of the state’ argument. Several of them are now pregnant and expected to give birth in a few of our months. Speaker Asarra thinks their rulers want the children since it is difficult for Isuzsonas to bear children, and having those who gave birth would be a coup for them to use to consolidate power.”
Daniel paused, his expression solemn. “That’s the gist of it, anyway. The speaker’s English was pretty good. He apparently learned from interacting with humans on the way here, so it’s not perfectly grammatical, but still understandable. The last item he shared was definitely a surprise. They are an all- male society. Some identify as life holders, bearing children, and the others are life givers. Asarra asked about ‘females’ and seemed fascinated because we have two sexes but multiple genders. I introduced Polly to them, and they were very curious and asked her a lot of questions. I’m sure they’ll have more.”
The administrator shifted in his chair. “What about you? Any questions about any of this? Misgivings?”
Mal shook his head. “I’m fascinated, actually. I understand why they left, and it sounds plausible. How did they find Goodwin Five? Will anyone follow them here?”
Dan smiled approvingly. “Good questions. They found us by chance, wanting only to put as many gates between themselves and Isuz as possible. The Speaker didn’t think their government would come after them– mostly because they faked a ship explosion. They are dead to Isuz, so they can never go back. The die for them has been permanently cast. Good thing we’re a welcoming kind of planet.”
Mal shook his head. “That was a huge gamble for them to take. We could have turned them away. It’s not like we have very many resources except for talent here. It’s a very good thing we have trading partners, and we’re used to sharing.”
Daniel looked away for a moment, then nodded. “Transport’s packed, so I’ve got to go. Like Billy, I have a good feeling about these beings but still use the force field. I sympathize with their story but still don’t actually know them. Better safe, right?”
“Don’t worry, I’m going to use it. Vinx is aware of it after many images, so I’m not going to try to explain why I’m not using it after that. You’d better get going, but thanks for the heads-up on them. Ping me five minutes out, so I can be waiting for all of you.”
“Will do. See you soon.”
