Gregory and Daniel’s Mating Ceremony
My selkie frolics inside my chest, whistling, humming in my brain, relentlessly happy. I smile, having more than a few reasons to look forward to today. Gregory will be well and truly taken care of, and I will be free to roam in search of my own mate. My beast rumbles and stretches inside me, hungry, longing. Yet, the feelings add to my happiness; a long-held restlessness is gone, and I laugh with the swelling crescendo of emotions. Who knew I would feel so delighted on Gregory’s wedding day?
As Gregory and I put the finishing touches on our wedding-day best in the groom’s dressing room of the church on Whidbey Island, a sound from the hall pricks up my ears. A short omega with soft golden curls and sparkling eyes bustles through the doorway, white lily boutonnieres held in his hands. White lilies—of course, Gregory would choose the flowers symbolizing rebirth and purity. A wedding to one’s mate is a rebirth of pure joy.
Turning my head to grin at him, I point out his message in our traditional floral accoutrements. “Still using Victorian flower language, I see.”
His rolls his eyes with a laugh and a shrug. “My love for my mate is pure.”
“Here you go, Monsieur Selkie gentil,” the tiny omega says, his voice bright, cheerful, and piercing in its beauty, the smile on his face happy and sweet. Though my eyes are on my best friend when the omega’s voice touches my ears, the sound rushes through my system like a storm.
My head swivels around, and I swallow hard as I take in the sight of this divine creature. My mate.
Mate, my selkie, whispers, a subtle shudder running through me.
Tilting my head a little to better catch the diminutive omega’s voice, I contemplate the texture and accents of the words falling from his lips. French, definitely. My mate is French. In this moment, it dawns on me exactly who he is – the best friend of Daniel, Gregory’s mate. Some other details flit through my memory as he gestures animatedly, the lilies still in his hands as he describes the floral arrangements in the church and how beautiful his best friend looks. My selkie bats all inconsequential thoughts aside. This beautiful man is my mate.
I can feel the smile on my face, and surely there must be some better expression to convey the joy bubbling in my soul at this moment. A smile could never do these feelings justice.
My mate hands Gregory his flower. “Thank you, Henri.”
Henri. His name is Henri. He turns to me, his hand outstretched, the beautiful flower nestled in his palm. “And for you, Best Man Selkie.”
Gently, I pick it up and hold it to my chest, overcome with the power of the moment.
“Au revoir, Selkies. See you at the end of the aisle.”
I laugh, my joy bursting forth. Henri looks surprised for a second, then offers me a genuine smile, followed by a saucy wink. As he turns to leave, all I can think of is how to keep him in my presence a moment longer. “Wait.”
My voice sounds urgent, even to me, and Gregory laughs. A glance in his direction tells me he understands the transformation taking over my life.
Henri looks over his shoulder at us with a quizzical look. “Yes?” he prompts as he turns around to face us again.
For the first time in a hundred years, I blush, overwhelmed by my mate and unable to speak for a moment.
Gregory, the bastard, cackles, and I throw him a dirty look, blinking at his audacity. He sobers, barely, but is momentarily restrained.
Henri raises his eyebrow. “What is up, selkies? Do not think I am susceptible to any tricks.”
I ignore Gregory’s unsuccessfully swallowed chuckle as I turn my face fully toward Henri. “Would you mind helping me pin it to my lapel? I have not worn one in a very long time.”
Henri laughs, the sound tinkling, almost like a crystal bell. “Of course, espèce de selkie coquin.”
After declaring me a naughty selkie, he steps closer to me and holds out his hand for the boutonniere. I give it over to him, and he removes the pin from the back of the arrangement and positions it on the lapel of my navy-blue jacket. When he finishes pinning it to the fabric, he pats my chest just below the flower. “There you go, coquin. You are very handsome now.”
My selkie rumbles in my laugh now. “Comme tu es mignon.” My mate is more than cute, but it is the only French compliment my mind provides at the moment. I must brush up on my language skills.
Henri glances up at me through his golden eyelashes, as a flirtatious grin spreads across his face. “Oui, I am. And you, Monsieur Selkie, are a flirt.” His head tilts up, and he stares me fully in the eyes. “Do not think I will fall for your charms so easily.” The statement sounds more like a warning than banter, and I file away the thought for further consideration.
“I wouldn’t dream of it,” I assure him and truly mean it.
