Closing his eyes, he placed a hand on the Bible, the other on the chalice, reminding himself that the building was a place of worship. Worship my arse. The people of the parish were poor; yet cap in hand, the bishop took to the streets, using religion to wheedle money out of the poor, disguised as forgiveness for their sins. Control at its finest, which served as a few Hail Marys for beating one’s wife after a night of drinking or having sex out of wedlock, with a backhander under the table and a seat at the right hand of the Father, and one was set for the weekend of debauchery.
He invited the parishioners up to the altar and mumbled, “Per eúndem Dóminum nostrum Jesum Christum Fílium Tuum,” hands in front of him with the offering.
When he opened them, all rational thought left his mind as he glanced into the eyes of one he knew so well, with his shoulders aching from scabbed-over skin.
