About The Book

Alone in a cell and lacking memories of his past, John has no idea who—or what—he is.

Alone on the streets of 1950s Los Angeles, Harry has far too many memories of his painful past and feels simply resignation in facing his empty future.

When Harry is given a chance to achieve his only dream—to become an agent with the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs—all he has to do is prove his worth. Yet nothing has ever come easy for him. Now he must offer himself and John as bait, enticing a man who wants to conquer death. But first he and John must learn what distinguishes a monster from a man—and what a monster truly wants.

The Review

A man with no name sits alone in a cell waiting for a small beam of sunlight to enter the cell and give him a small amount of warmth. John is the name he calls himself because everyone should have a name and John is now his. He doesn’t eat and each day he fantasizes about something, something that gives him a small amount of comfort.

The cell he is held in belongs to the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs and after torturing him they just locked him away. Now the Bureau has a need for him only noone wants to go anywhere near him. That is when Chief Townsend seeks out Harry Lowe a man with no job, no money and soon homeless, a man who came seeking a job with the Bureau but was turned away. Harry is being given a chance to join the Bureau but only if he accepts an assignment and pulls it off, the assignment that noone else wants.

John is considered a creature no different than Frankenstein, no heartbeat, no memories and not a living human. Someone else is trying to recreate life out of corpses taking the best parts and trying to make a human out of them, something John’s creator succeeded in doing. Now Harry has to use John as bait to get Swan to reveal what he is doing so that he can be stopped. Everyday that John is free he changes, hair grows, his skeletal body is filling out and he is more human than the humans who held him prisoner.

Harry has secrets and had a terrible childhood, he is gay and it is the 1950’s a time when being gay was not something one revealed, when Harry’s family discovered his secret he was thrown out at the age of sixteen. The more time Harry spends with John the more he begins to care for him and the feeling is mutual but John knows that he will be returned to his cell. What happens is something I won’t reveal.

This book truly affected me because the true monsters were the so called humans, and it never ceases to amaze me the things we can do to one another.

I am an avid reader the mother of 3 sons and grandmother to seven grandchildren. Since retiring I have been doing more reading while volunteering as a CASA worker. CASA is an organization that works with the family court system to ensure that children are in the best living situation. There are way too many children that get overlooked in the foster care system and I visit homes and make visits to the parents. I was born and raised in New York and my husband of 50 years and I live in Upstate New York.
