MOVIES: Eternals Director Asked Marvel Not to Censor Film’s LGBTQ+ Content for International Audiences

Eternals’ director Chloé Zhao has confirmed she has talked to Marvel about not censoring LGBTQ+ content in the upcoming film for international audiences. Zhao told IndieWire that introducing Phastos, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) first openly gay superhero, was “written into the story” long before she joined as director. Phastos appears in the film with his husband and their son, and Zhao said it was important that their family and their story felt “authentic and real” because the “audience has to feel that to care”. Marvel dropped new footage from the studio’s next superhero flick which promises to be an action-packed epic. In the 30-second teaser, fans get their first look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) first LGBT+ family. The clip showed Bryan Tyree Henry’s Phastos, the first openly gay superhero in the MCU, his husband (Haaz Sleiman) and their child meeting Richard Madden and Gemma Chan’s characters.
