Excerpt

The woman let out a sob as she stopped fighting the man and prepared herself to be violated. She knew what was about to happen and was powerless to stop it. At least this way, it would only take her a few days to recover from the assault. Fighting only made the injuries worse.

Marc watched as the woman closed her eyes and waited for the inevitable. Darkness fell across his eyes.

She did not notice the dark figure silently creeping through the darkness. She did not notice the figure reach into the heap of trash and pick up the rusted metal rod. She did, however, jump when her back was suddenly sprayed with a warm, wet liquid.

She turned her head and let out a scream as she stared into Carlos’ wide eyes. Blood trickled out the side of his mouth which had been pried open by the large metal rod that had been shoved through the back of his head.

His eyes twitched briefly with the intrusion of the foreign object. The woman let out a scream as Carlos’ body twitched one last time before it collapsed onto her.

The woman cried out into the darkness as she tried to slide her shivering body out from under the dead beast.

Marc took a step towards the terrified woman. He felt terrible that she had to witness such a violent act. He did it so that she would be safe. That was what he was telling himself.

“Are you alright?” Marc asked, standing next to the draining body. He took a step to the side to avoid the pool of blood expanding from Carlos’ head.

The woman looked terrified as she stared up at Marc. God only knows what she is thinking at this very moment.

“I won’t hurt you.” Marc raised his hands in the air hoping to comfort the woman. “I’m sorry if I startled you, but there was no way I was going to let that man have his way with you.” He nodded his head towards the bleeding ogre appearing indifferent.

There did not appear to be any physical injuries to the woman other than the injuries sustained from the initial assault. She sat cowering next to her very dead pimp, not seeming to notice the blood that was flowing dangerously close to her long-painted fingernails.

“Are you okay?” Marc asked again when he received no response. She nodded her head, yes, not daring to move.

The woman was clearly in shock, which was a normal reaction for someone who just witnessed their pimp murdered by a rod through the head. Marc was no psychologist, but he hoped that she would be able to get over this trauma… eventually.

He hadn’t thought this through. He saw the woman being attacked and memories of his own abuse surfaced causing him to react violently. At least another monster had been removed from the chessboard.

Marc bent down and picked up the large wad of cash that had fallen out of Carlos’ back pocket when he started breathing through the back of his head.

The woman slid backwards on the ground as Marc approached her. He held out the roll of cash, which consisted mostly of twenties and tens and nodded for her to take it.

“Here take the cash. Do you have a place to go and get yourself cleaned up?” Marc was beginning to get annoyed with the woman’s inability to move her mouth. This would be considered a workplace tragedy if her mouth no longer operated.

“Yes…” the woman’s voice was low and shaken.

“Good. Go there and get yourself cleaned up. If anyone asks you, you paid Carlos his money and then you left. You have no idea what happened to him after that. The Police will think it was a mugging or drug deal gone bad.” Marc searched the woman’s face for understanding. When he could not find any, he added “Is that clear?”

“Yes… it is.” The woman finally spoke as she slowly lifted her body up off the cold ground.

“Good.” Marc nodded his head and turned to leave.
