“SO, what you’re saying is, your husband, leader of the Third Reich, perpetrator of the Holocaust, and poster child for all aspiring genocidal dictators, was kidnapped right before your very eyes?” It comes off as more of a question than I mean it to.
Eva Braun looks at me with disgust over my butchered German.
“Ja,” Eva says, the word clipped.
I adjust my glasses, words in green text peering back at me
from my lenses, unhelpfully translating the word “ja.” The tech on the glasses works great for interpretation, but it’s not so great as a learning tool. Saying I can speak German is like saying a toddler can communicate in full sentences. Unrealistic. And there’s nothing the glasses can do if I want to say anything back.
Standing beside me is my brain parasite of a partner, Darshan Singh, rolling his eyes like a Ferris wheel while doing absolutely nothing to help. Shouldn’t you be somewhere failing upwards? I think to myself.
