Midweek Mingle: Just Do It

So, most of what I tend to post in the Midweek Mingle, at least when it comes to fiction, is fairly focused. One thing or one very small group of things to work with to help out with QUILTBAG+ inclusivity. Blah, blah, blah, you probably know the drill by now. I’m going to keep doing that, too, but this week is a bit of an aside. Not a departure from the topic, but a departure from the format, I guess you would say. Also possibly a copyright infringement on the good people at Nike, but we’ll cross that bridge when … Read more

New Photos of Saturn’s Moon Rhea

Rhea

After a couple of years in high-inclination orbits that limited its ability to encounter Saturn’s moons, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft returned to Saturn’s equatorial plane in March 2015. As a prelude to its return to the realm of the icy satellites, the spacecraft had its first relatively close flyby of an icy moon (apart from Titan) in almost two years on Feb. 9. During this encounter Cassini’s cameras captured images of the icy moon Rhea, as shown in these in two image mosaics. The views were taken about an hour and a half apart as Cassini drew closer to Rhea. Images … Read more

Word Nerding: Old Words We Miss

words

Thought we’d have some fun today. As writers we generally LOVE words. And each of us has certain words we are fond of, no matter how many editors try to nix them from our writing. We were talking the other day about some of these words – specifically giveth, taketh, and thrice – and we thought it would be fun to have a chat about words that are no longer in general use that we still have a fondness for. This also applies to words like burnt (instead of burned) – although, curiously, we still say spent (not spended) and … Read more

We’ve seen him fly over the Grand Canyon and in tandem with military jets, but now Jetman Yves Rossy and his protege, Jetman Vince Reffet, have taken on the surreal landscape of the city of Dubai in an HD video that feels like something out of a science fiction film, buzzing landmarks like the Burj Khalifa and the Palm Islands. Says Rossy: “That feeling of freedom in all dimensions, it’s so new. Just playing in the air with a machine that brings you in another world.”

The film follows William Mandella, a young student enlisted by Earth’s leaders to help fight the alien Taurans.
