Earth Warriors: The Four Heroes of Peace - Lui Petri

QSFer Lui Petri has a new queer sci-fi book out (ace, bi, gay, lesbian, poly): Earth Warriors: The Four Heroes of Peace.

What does it take to survive in a hostile universe?

The alien empire, Zlocu, has dedicated itself to evolution through violence after a civil war ravaged its planet. Now, as part of its plan, it has declared war on all galactic civilizations. And Earth is next.

With Earth’s military crumbling under the onslaught and interplanetary governments also on the edge of collapse, four unlikely heroes band together to stop the empire. Logan Preaker, a swordsman fighting for true equality. Seiner Butch, a scientific man driven by justice. Amira Dhorian, the last princess of her planet. And Tania Maestas, a magician seeking true happiness.

Each has lost something to the empire and, together, they’re determined to halt the Zlocu’s twisted evolution for good. But humanity has its own ghosts to contend with. Abandoned by the universe, the fate of the Earth and the universe rests on the shoulders of four heroes. And they’ll have to take down an empire to save it.

“How daring,” Seiner whispers, still unconvinced as he rolls his eyes.

“Such beauty from an alien, haha!” Tania says.

“Huh?” Amira turns to her as she lets go of Logan’s hand. “What do you mean by ‘alien,’ dear human?”

“Well, an alien is a term we Earthlings use to describe beings that are not from our planet, for instance, you. I mean, the surrounding universe is supposed to be something around fourteen billion parsecs with a dim chance of a life form like you to appear. Now we have seen that other alien life forms weren’t the only ones, unless you can convince me otherwise,” Seiner says.

“Really? Well, with that description I think it also fits you in my world. After all, we are aliens in every way,” Amira says sheepishly.

“Haha, haha! That’s a pretty statement you got there, dear girlie! But hey, tell me, what tricks do you have, do you fly, do you fight, do you fly, do you breathe underwater, anything?” Tania says rapidly, like she has been running.

“Well, I can fly with these wings . . . another ability specific to my race. I cannot do it right now. I am not old enough to do it.”

“And what could that ability be, bestie?” Tania asks.

“The Norai technique. A force shared among the Soranians. It involves being able to manipulate objects around your area with the simple power of thought. But I’m not old enough to have it yet. I need a year to gain such power.”

“I see, but can’t you use your wings for anything yet?” Seiner says.

The alien princess shakes her head in response.

“Why the bloody hell not?” Seiner asks.

“Because I have been injured, and I do not want to attract their attention.”

“Their? The aliens?” Seiner asks once more.

“The Zlocu,” Amira says as she turns away from them.

Seiner ponders something for a moment. “Let me guess, your species provoked them or something like that? It better be a good reason why you’re so alone here,” Seiner asks, his eyes scanning without any emotion whatsoever.

She gasps in response.

“Shut it!” Logan says.

“I am a Soranian, an inhabitant of the planet Sorania, or rather, I’m what’s left of my people.”

“Right. What else?” Seiner asks.

“The thing is, all of this happened even though we only wanted peace. The rest of the galaxy was at peace for a long time, providing the security and services for the well-being of the other beings in the galaxy. But I never expected a poor race like the Zlocu could turn to war like this. And all in the name of the next step of ‘evolution’. They have become stronger in the years that passed, taking control of most of the spaceports, colonies, and warp gates to their advantage, and slaughtering anyone deemed weak to their cause, my race included.”

“All of that for despising peace? But, aren’t there any survivors you know, someone to pick you up and regroup? Or maybe they perished because these Zlocu beings are everywhere?” Logan asks incredulously.

“Unfortunately, yes.”

All of them stare in silence; every one of them has lost everything dear to them, all for the common goals of the Zlocu: evolution and eradication of the weak. Perhaps the nature of war itself could expand to other races after all.

“Well, now, let’s keep the rest of the story for later. Can someone build a fire pit, please? It’s getting very dark here,” Logan asks.

“Are you kidding me? We’ll get spotted. Not to mention that the Zlocans may just hear us at any minute. We should move farther away into the woods. I may still use my flashlight though,” Seiner whispers as he reaches for his pocket.

“Roger that,” Logan says.

Soon, he and the rest move farther into the woods under treetops that obscure them.

“By the way, can I know all your names? We haven’t known each other that much yet, but I guess it would be fun to have some new fellas around here,” Logan says.

“S-sure thing. I am Amira Dhorian. Former princess of the kingdom, now a fugitive,” Amira says.

“Seiner Butch, and before you ask, no I’m not a freaking skint,” Seiner says.

“I’m Tania Maestas, but you can call me Tany. Nice to meet you all!” Tany says.

“Well, my name is Logan Preaker Hijikata, but you can use Logan Preaker if you like. Also, at your service,” Logan says.

With a faint smile, Amira leans near him, something he expected as he holds her tight, with Amira glancing at him for a bit.

This is sweet. Maybe this can work. “It is very nice to know you all, dear humans,” Amira replies.

“Don’t bother with that act, like you know him. We’ve just met,” Seiner says.

“Yeah, sweetie!” Tany says. “You will have lots of fun getting moral lessons from all of us!”

“As if we’re good enough,” Seiner says with a scoff.

“Well, my years of teaching high school and camping might help her in her situation,” Logan says. “But if we’re careful enough, she’ll know us better, and perhaps we will know her, too.”

“Whatever you say, mate,” Seiner says as he realizes he can’t keep up with Logan’s witty behavior.

“Well, well, well, now, here’s a big question for you to answer, and it’s highly, hugely, important,” Tany says in a whispering tone. The others stare at her like she is hiding a mysterious secret.

Finally, Tany says, “How did you all get into this stinky mess? I came here when a bunch of cops led by a guy who looked like those Wild-West cowboys led me to safety. Here’s hoping they’re still alive!”

“All alone, or did you came with others?” Logan asks. Tany’s eyes widen as she slightly gasps, thinking of Logan’s words. She then chuckles highly.

“Kicked the bucketly bucket, but that’s life, ya know? But maybe my saviors can still be here!”

“I hope they still do, Tany,” Amira replies as she smiles a little.
