Discussion: Changing Your Gender and Orientation

DNA

We’re learning more about human genetics and sexuality each year. Soon we’ll be able to make babies form the DNA of a gay couple together, and maybe someday soon we’ll be able to predict a child’s sexual orientation. What if science advanced to a point where it would be possible to change sexual orientations? Where you could flip a switch and go from being gay to straight, or bi, or…? What if you could fully change your gender (internal and external)? Would you do it? For a day or a week or a lifetime? And how would true orientation and … Read more

Guest Post: Cheryl Headford, Author of Hostage

Hostage

We’re thrilled today to have a guest post from Cheryl Headford, the author of the new book Hostage: Anger is one of those things that both tear down and build up. Righteous anger can be the spur we need to get off our arses and DO something, while simmering cold anger can poison us and make us do things we never thought we would stoop to. Both kinds of anger appear in Hostage. Rowan’s anger is his driving force. It has lodged itself deep in his heart and colours everything he thinks and does. In particular it dominates his relationship … Read more

Massive To-Scale Model Of Our Solar System Will Blow Your Mind

Solar System Model

Filmmakers Wylie Overstreet, Alex Gorosh and a few of their friends took on a hugely creative, and impressive, task of fittingly creating a to-scale model of our solar system in a 3.5-mile patch of desert known for hosting one of the most artistic festivals in the U.S.: Burning Man Festival. Gorosh and Overstreet documented the process and techniques they used to create this massive model utilizing a mix of technology and agricultural techniques including drones, GPS coordinates, electrical lighting, a click wheel to measure distance and a makeshift farming harrow to create their model within a short 36 hours. Getting the Guy (or Girl)

bisexual

In honor of Bisexual Awareness Week, we have a topic from QSFer Freddy MacKay: From a reader perspective, if an author’s character is bi, and actively dates both sexes during a series, but ends up with an opposite sex partner, how would that make you feel? Why? It’s an interesting question – whatever your orientation, there’s a natural desire to see things work out the way you hope they would in your own life. But we also open ourselves up to the experiences of others. As a gay man, I’ve been exposed to heterosexual romance my entire life – and … Read more

Girls Who Grow Penises at Twelve

Great fodder for a story: In a village in the Dominican Republic, an estimated one in fifty children are born ‘girls’ before growing male genitalia during puberty. The children are known as Guevedoces – roughly translated as “penis-at-12” – referring to the age they are when their physical appearance starts to change. This extraordinary intersex condition – known medically as 5-alpha-reductase deficiency – has been documented for a new BBC2 series ‘Countdown to Life’ which takes a look at how we develop in the womb and how early changes impact us for the rest of our lives.
