Sources of Inspiration: Shiny!

Lately, I’ve been overwhelmed. Trying to make deadlines. Finishing projects. Trying to market myself. Trying, trying, I’m so very trying. (rueful grin) I think I’ve been trying too hard. I need to find the fun again. After all, if I’m not having fun finishing my projects and marketing myself, how can I expect anyone else to appreciate my efforts? This is one of the reasons Quartz mouths off to on varied social media. We’re attempting to have a little fun while marketing…and venting. :) He expresses a lot of my own doubs and irritations about my journey as a … Read more

QSF Reaches 3000!

3000

Yesterday afternoon, the QSF Facebook Group reached three thousand members – on the heels of our email list hitting 1,000 folks and our fourth year anniversary. To celebrate, we’ll be giving away a variety of things, and running a little contest we call “Plunging Into the Black Hole”. It’s simple. Come up with a speculative fiction book title that’s also a double entendre – sci fi, fantasy, paranormal or horror – and post it on the FB group post here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/qsfdiscussions/permalink/831367560343523/ Then we’ll choose a winner later and award them a $10 Amazon gift card. Have fun! Happy 3K!

FOR WRITERS: Does ANYONE Click Twitter Links?

Twitter - pixabay

FOR WRITERS Today’s writer topic comes from QSFer J. Scott Coatsworth: I’ve just checked four of our website trackers, including QSF and my own site. While Facebook is consistently the top non-search engine site sending traffic our way, often with thousands of visitors, Twitter barely registers. On two sites, December had zero visits from twitter to the website. On the other, 2 and 18, respectively. So what do you think? Does anyone actually click on Twitter links? Is it a worthwhile vehicle for driving traffic? If so, what kind of tweets attract the most attention? And a corollary – if … Read more

TV: Highs of ‘Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams’ Outweigh the Lows

Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams

Is it possible for a piece of pop culture to be an imitation when it’s already being imitated? That’s the tricky hypothetical facing Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams, the latest original series from Amazon’s streaming service. Electric Dreams is an episodic sci-fi anthology that deploys a wide range of recognizable faces, both British and American, to bring each of its self-contained worlds to light. (An international coproduction, Electric Dreams aired on the U.K.’s Channel 4 last fall before making its stateside premiere last Friday.) In this respect, Electric Dreams is to Black Mirror what Amazon’s Lord of the Rings project … Read more

Happy Fourth Birthday, QSF

qsf-4

Today is the Fourth Birthday for Queer Sci Fi. Yes, it’s sad but true – QSF didn’t always exist, except maybe in some fever dream. But we’re here now, and to celebrate, we’re gonna give away a $20 gift certificate to Amazon or the Publisher of your choice (assuming they give gift certificates)! For a chance to win, just comment on the Facebook post for this celebration about how you found QSF the first time, or something good that has happened to you because of the group. LOL I know, fishing for compliments. :) Winner to be chosen at random. … Read more
