Justin Trudeau, Superhero

Justin Trudeau can save us any day. The Canadian Prime Minister will be gracing the cover of Marvel’s upcoming Civil War II: Choosing Sides, issue #5, coming on August 31st. Oddly enough, he looks even better in ink form than in real life. A Marvel spokesperson told Mashable that Trudeau would also be a minor character in the issue — though he probably won’t be blowing up any buildings. Canadians don’t do that. Here’s the plot: “Alpha Flight, once Canada’s premiere Super Hero team, now working globally for Captain Marvel, seek the advice of their old boss—Canadian Prime Minister Justin … Read more

Dispatches from Hogwarts G.S.A.: Hello QSFers!

When Scott posted an open invitation to write a column for QSF, I thought: “Cool opportunity!” Then I thought, “What the hell am I going to call it?” That question followed me around for a while like a storm cloud, sending me hiding for cover, too filled with angst to even try to tackle a response. I mean, A: I’m an author, so whatever I called this column had to be clever and good. And B: QSF is a site for sci fi and fantasy fans and writers, so the expectation for cleverness is especially high. Then, C: Whatever I … Read more

For Readers: Queer Action Heroes

Today’s reader topic comes from QSFer Hank T. Cannon: Who are your favorite LGBTQIA action heroes? Not necessarily spec-fic. What do you like about them? How do they satisfy action hero tropes? Are they “gay” enough, or does it not matter, because they’re blowing things up? Writers: This is a reader chat – you are welcome to join it, but please do not reference your own works directly. Captain America and Bucky Get Together – in Porn

Captain America and Bucky Barnes are finally going to have gay sex, but it won’t exactly be canon. Following the excitement over gay porn versions of X-Men: Apocalypse and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it was only a matter of time we would have an XXX version of Captain America: Civil War. Instead of those long glances and meaningful stares in the Marvel film, we’ll likely find out who tops and bottoms in the Men.com version between the two superheroes. For Writers: Diseases of the Future

germs

Today’s writer topic comes from QSFer Hank T. Cannon: There is a certain percentage of the population that cannot catch AIDS as their cells are missing the receptors that allow the AIDS virus to enter the cell. Per a TV show a year or two ago, on the Science channel as I recall, this genetic difference also seems to aid in surviving Bubonic Plague. Anyone done a story which explores this difference and its possible origin or whether in the future it will spread to more of the population? I see possibilities. It’s an interesting question. What would the diseases … Read more

Marvel Video Game Outs Gay Superhero

Union Jack

The game, which features alternate younger versions of the classic Marvel characters attending a not-at-all-like-X-Men superhero school, debuted Jack’s alter ego Brian Falsworth in an update. Tucked inside a story mission within the game is a minor revelation, when Black Widow approaches the character and attempts to flirt. He responds: “No offence, you’re not my type.” When asked if he prefers another female character instead, Falsworth responds: “I’m telling you I’m gay.” By Nick Duffy – Full Story at Pink News

For Readers: Attracting New Readers to Queer Speculative Fiction

queer books

Today’s reader topic comes from QSFer Amelia Faulkner: I’d love to discuss how to attract readers to queer genre fiction. As in, what does it take for a spec-fi reader to pick up Queer spec-fi rather than Het-normative spec-fi? Is there any hope for mass-market appeal? That kind of thing. Why We Still Do This

Science-Fiction, Fantasy and Horror have been called “escapist literature.” Much of it may rightly be described as pure entertainment, although sometimes it may have a loftier purpose. In my case, I write entertaining fluff. Starstuff and shadow blended for the pleasure of the reader (and the writer). Hopefully an entertaining diversion from the mundane reality of the world. But reality has a tendency to intrude. The massacre at Orlando’s Pulse club on June 12 has shoved the idea of plotting out something entertaining to the background. Creatures of the night find their power to terrify fade into insignificance in the … Read more
