For Readers: Metaphorically Queer

X-Men

For Readers: Today’s reader topic comes from QSFer Andrew Kelley: I know that there are several Sci-fi movies and books that weren’t specifically LGBT themes and didn’t even make mention of any LGBT issues that I strongly identified with and really moved me. Even though I don’t think the author/director/screenwriter meant it to be an analogy it still could have been. Are there movies/ books that others felt this way about as well? Barrowman - Torchwood

John Barrowman is working on getting Torchwood back on screen. Could Game of Thrones Help Push Marriage Equality in Northern Ireland?

Game Of Thrones

Game of Thrones is about dragons, death, destruction. It could also destroy Northern Ireland’s continuing reluctance to legalize same-sex marriage. LGBTI rights advocates are warning Northern Ireland’s booming film industry could be lost if the country refuses to treat its citizens and residents equally. The HBO show, which films in Northern Ireland six months out of the year, is just one prime example that could be moved if politicians refuse to pass a marriage law. Game of Thrones has boosted the country’s tourism industry alone by £8.6 million a year. By Joe Morgan – Full Story at SOURCE

Dispatches from Hogwarts G.S.A.: A Game of Thrones Report Card

We love HBO’s Game of Thrones. It’s some of the best storytelling on premium cable, possibly the best production quality ever for a TV series (DRAGONS!), and the directing and acting are pretty darn awesome to boot. We’re also really happy the phenomenally popular show has increased interest in high fantasy on the small screen, big screen, and in books. Another thing we love about GoT is that it has gay, lesbian and bisexual characters and decent portrayals of women. The Hogwarts G.S.A. believes gender equality and LGBTQ equality go hand-in-hand, so strong, diverse female characters are important to us … Read more

Does Game of Thrones Have a Gay Problem?

After the heartbreaking events of recent weeks, there was little that could draw crowds away from the Gay Pride festivities in New York on Sunday afternoon. But there was something even more powerful than rainbow flags and Jell-O shots: Game of Thrones. Plenty of people, myself included, rushed home from the sea of men in chaps to watch Cersei Lannister put on a S&M outfit of her own to seize the crown. You better work, queen! And so, when Loras Tyrell died within the first 15 minutes of the show, it was a huge disappointment for gay fans. Not only … Read more
