It’s All Aboot Star Trek

Canadian Star Trek Coins

The Canadian Mint has announced its plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek by releasing a line of coins that can actually be used in financial transactions…if you were so inclined. Some of them are even reasonably priced. The $10 colored coins featuring Kirk, Spock, Uhura, and Scotty are only being sold for slightly over the face value, while the $20 silver coins featuring the Enterprise are being sold at face value. Here’s where it gets dicey. The colored silver coins with the Enterprise are going for over $100 in Canadian dollars, even though it only has $20 … Read more

We Already Invented the Wheel. Where the Boys Aren’t – Part 1.

John Allenson

When I started thinking of the topic of women only societies I quickly realized that I perceived of two separate types of story under the same label of ‘Lesbian Utopia’.  While there is a LOT of overlap in the way people have written about societies where a group of women have separated from the mainstream mixed society, (Amazons,) and single-sex worlds I’ve decided to treat the two as separate topics. After all, it’s not as if we talk way too much about women.  I’ll talk about Warrior Women in a later article dedicated to her history.  There is enough information … Read more

Trailer: Star Trek Beyond

Star Trek Beyond

There’s a new trailer for Star Trek Beyond out, and with it, Rihanna’s new single from the film’s soundtrack, titled “Sledgehammer.” And while there isn’t a lot of new information in the trailer itself (the Enterprise is still getting ripped to shreds; Idris Elba’s blue-faced reptilian villain is still representing the part of space where “the frontier pushes back”) you can at least listen to “Sledgehammer.” Beyond is scheduled for a US release on July 22nd and is directed by Justin Lin, a stalwart of the Fast & Furious franchise. As this heritage might suggest, the new film looks like … Read more

Star Wars Fan Petitions for Gay Character to Honor Orlando Victim

A Star Wars superfan whose best friend was murdered in the Orlando massacre is petitioning the powers that be behind the sci-fi films to dedicate an LGBT character in memory of his friend and all who lost their lives at Pulse. That character would be the first openly LGBT character in the Star Wars universe. As we previously reports, Drew Leinonen was gunned down at Pulse with his boyfriend Juan Ramon Guerrero. The couple, who friends and family said wanted to get married, were buried together after the tragedy. Drew’s best friend Joshua Yehl (right) came up with the idea … Read more

Dispatches from Hogwarts G.S.A.: A Game of Thrones Report Card

We love HBO’s Game of Thrones. It’s some of the best storytelling on premium cable, possibly the best production quality ever for a TV series (DRAGONS!), and the directing and acting are pretty darn awesome to boot. We’re also really happy the phenomenally popular show has increased interest in high fantasy on the small screen, big screen, and in books. Another thing we love about GoT is that it has gay, lesbian and bisexual characters and decent portrayals of women. The Hogwarts G.S.A. believes gender equality and LGBTQ equality go hand-in-hand, so strong, diverse female characters are important to us … Read more

Trailer: NASA’s Jupiter Approach

Jupiter

A spinning, solar-powered spacecraft as wide as a basketball court will arrive at Jupiter on July 4 to study the giant planet and to take the highest-resolution images of Jupiter in history. NASA’s robotic Juno probe is carrying seven science instruments designed to help scientists figure out how Jupiter formed and evolved. The planet is the most massive in our solar system — a huge ball of gas 11 times wider than Earth. Researchers think it was the first planet to form and that it holds clues to how the solar system evolved. “One of the primary goals of Juno … Read more

Justin Trudeau, Superhero

Justin Trudeau can save us any day. The Canadian Prime Minister will be gracing the cover of Marvel’s upcoming Civil War II: Choosing Sides, issue #5, coming on August 31st. Oddly enough, he looks even better in ink form than in real life. A Marvel spokesperson told Mashable that Trudeau would also be a minor character in the issue — though he probably won’t be blowing up any buildings. Canadians don’t do that. Here’s the plot: “Alpha Flight, once Canada’s premiere Super Hero team, now working globally for Captain Marvel, seek the advice of their old boss—Canadian Prime Minister Justin … Read more

Does Game of Thrones Have a Gay Problem?

After the heartbreaking events of recent weeks, there was little that could draw crowds away from the Gay Pride festivities in New York on Sunday afternoon. But there was something even more powerful than rainbow flags and Jell-O shots: Game of Thrones. Plenty of people, myself included, rushed home from the sea of men in chaps to watch Cersei Lannister put on a S&M outfit of her own to seize the crown. You better work, queen! And so, when Loras Tyrell died within the first 15 minutes of the show, it was a huge disappointment for gay fans. Not only … Read more
