RETRO NEWS: RIP Joanna Russ

Joanna Russ

This article from 2011 popped up in my feed today. I thought it was worth a re-run: The coolest woman in sci-fi since Alien’s Ellen Ripley, sci-fi writer and feminist critic Joanna Russ, died on her home planet this Friday. She would have wanted you to read her books (namely because they’re awesome), so here’s where to start: The famous 74-year-old author wrote The Female Man, a book about women fighting against misogyny in alternate universes and How to Suppress Women’s Writing, an examination of sexism in the art world. She also published The Adventures of Alyx a short-story collection … Read more

FOR READERS: She Had Blue Eyes And Chest Hair

FOR READERS Today’s reader topic comes from QSFer Denise Dechene: I’ve read some books where MCs are only described vaguely (ht, wt, hair color) leaving the rest to our imagination. I’ve also read books that the MCs are described down to how many chest hairs. When you read how detailed do you want your characters? Find Your Ooga Boo With Cher

Ooga Boo

A delightfully weird release came down the pike from Cher this week, a new track called “Ooga Boo” from the animated children’s television show Home: Adventures with Tip & Oh, streaming now on Netflix. The music video finds Cher styled as an aqua-colored extraterrestrial adorned in various lavish outfits, all the while traveling through space with the title characters, at one point landing on a throne for one Chercophonie. Marking Cher’s first song in several years — her last release was the 2014 single “I Walk Alone,” off her 2013 album Closer to the Truth — the electro-inspired track personifies … Read more

Disney Characters Re-Imagined as Trans

Trans Ariel

We’ve seen Disney characters re-imagined as everything from tattooed pin-ups to LGBTQ couples to hipsters to parents. Heck, we’ve even seen what they’d look like in real life! But while the Disney trend might seem overdone by now, a new series which re-illustrates our beloved characters as transgender is one we can certainly get behind. An anonymous illustrator, who goes by the Instagram handle Trans Disney, is drawing the studio’s most famous tales as if their lead characters were trans. The artist is an art director from New York City who spent their childhood watching Disney movies. “I love them … Read more

Nuclear War News You Can Use

A nuclear explosion would be devastating to the planet ― and would mean a very bad hair day for millions. That’s the unnerving wisdom contained in tips the government has issued for dealing with a nuclear blast. Along with standard advice, like covering your head and not looking directly at the flashing fireball, comes this hair-raising recommendation: “Wash your hair with shampoo or soap and water. Do not use conditioner in your hair because it will bind radioactive material to your hair, keeping it from rinsing out easily.” This bit of nuclear wisdom has been around for a while. But … Read more

Russian Publisher Censors Fantasy Author’s Gay Storyline

VE Schwab

A Russian publisher is under fire for censoring a gay storyline in a popular fantasy novel series without permission from the US-based author. Victoria Schwab is the author of the Shades of Magic series, which features a number of LGBT characters, including a bisexual prince who has a same-sex romance. The bestselling books were translated into Russian as part of a deal with Russia-based publisher Rosmen. However, the author was horrified to discover via a reader that the story had been doctored for the Russian translation, in order to omit the gay relationship. She tweeted: “The Russian edition of Shades … Read more
