Stephan's Monster

QSFer Shelby Rhodes has a new MM Paranormal book out: Jayden knows he’s a monster. The people he killed were horrible, but it didn’t change what he was. And being taken in by Stephan Everwood at fifteen hadn’t changed his homicidal tendencies. Yet ten years later he finds himself struggling to be someone he’s not. Then, despite thinking he lost most of his emotions years ago, Jayden discovers that not only is he not as empty inside as he thought, but that his monster is more present than ever before. Stephan freely admits he has some issues. His self-doubts could … Read more

FOR WRITERS/READERS: Cursing in Other Worlds

FOR WRITERS/READERS Today’s writer topic comes from QSFer Meraki P. Lyhne: Both writers and readers can join in here. Cussing in the future or in Fantasy worlds. What would readers find belivable? Like do they even consider that many derive from Christianity? Which wouldn’t be belivable in a world without the religion. And in the future? How original should the author be to make a belivable change to vocabulary? This is a legacy topic – one that we’ve discussed before, but thought was good enough to bring around again. Join the chat

TV: Lord of the Rings Prequel Series Picked Up By Amazon

Lord of the Rings

This actually happened a couple months back, but I missed it entirely: In its quest to launch a hit fantasy series of the Game of Thrones caliber, Amazon has closed a massive deal — said to be close to $250 million — to acquire global TV rights to The Lord of the Rings, based on the fantasy novels by J.R.R. Tolkien. The streaming service has given a multi-season commitment to a LOTR series in the pact, which also includes a potential spinoff series. The LOTR original series, a prequel to Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring, will be produced by … Read more

FOR WRITERS: Does ANYONE Click Twitter Links?

FOR WRITERS Today’s writer topic comes from QSFer J. Scott Coatsworth: I’ve just checked four of our website trackers, including QSF and my own site. While Facebook is consistently the top non-search engine site sending traffic our way, often with thousands of visitors, Twitter barely registers. On two sites, December had zero visits from twitter to the website. On the other, 2 and 18, respectively. So what do you think? Does anyone actually click on Twitter links? Is it a worthwhile vehicle for driving traffic? If so, what kind of tweets attract the most attention? And a corollary – if … Read more

TV: Highs of ‘Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams’ Outweigh the Lows

Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams

Is it possible for a piece of pop culture to be an imitation when it’s already being imitated? That’s the tricky hypothetical facing Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams, the latest original series from Amazon’s streaming service. Electric Dreams is an episodic sci-fi anthology that deploys a wide range of recognizable faces, both British and American, to bring each of its self-contained worlds to light. (An international coproduction, Electric Dreams aired on the U.K.’s Channel 4 last fall before making its stateside premiere last Friday.) In this respect, Electric Dreams is to Black Mirror what Amazon’s Lord of the Rings project … Read more
